What a great story, and a great way to introduce yourself here. I can imagine how nice it must feel to be back behind the wheel of your old van. That one was meant to be.

I'm glad you all enjoyed the story... Of course, it goes on...
Dixoncj: I put a cleaner link to the newest iteration of the AdVANture travelogue website in my signature, but yanks for posting what you found, I didn't know all that old stuff was still archived. I enjoyed looking at some of those pictures I took during one of my trips to Chile.
I was out of the VW loop for so long, it's SO GREAT to be back, really. I am on the board of my local Mercedes Benz Club, as I work for MB and am into old Mercedes... Great cars of course, but there is something about e VW crowd that I really like.
One of the stops on my trip around the fou try was to "Beetle Fun Fest" at Mid America in Effingham, IL, that was a great time. Id be interested to see how that show has evolved over the last 12 years.
And someone asked about the bus I was supposed to help my buddy back in Cincinnati find. We found one on eBay he liked that night while we were both on the phone, a '76 or '78 I think... Total restoration out of CA, the same seller has a similar looking green westy on eBay at the moment... Paid right up for it, pulled the trigger the next day and won the auction, about $11,000 if I recall... He didn't want any part of a project, just a complete, good looking and mechanically sound vehicle (which i hope is what he got!), he's not really a car guy, just wanted someone cool. Funny thing is, his parents had THE SAME kind of westfalia, same color, etc. as the one he bought, sort of that yellow orange exterior with the green and blue interior. They used to pop the top when we were little and we'd play in it when we were kids, 30 years ago... See... Everyone comes back to see things. _________________ 1982 Vanagon L Westfalia

This one has been a crowd pleaser on Facebook. The pop top canvas was perfect when I had it... the last owner pretty much trashed that.

So, have you only owned 'one' van, or does this count as the 'second' van ownership?
That is an awesome story. _________________ 1990 Feldjäger Syncro AAZ

Great story - I look forward to checking out your webpages from the 12K trip. Nice writing style too - my favorite from this:
"Could I buy this thing? Could I really do this, I already have a '73 Mercedes coupe in the garage, what will my wife say? All the things that go through your mind."
So well describes this affliction -
Congratulations - seriously - and thanks for sharing this. |
