Well after lurking about on TheSamba.com for a few months, I finally registered and made it official. I am in the process of my next project. It is a 1956 Oval that I found for sale on this very site. It is very solid and all I have is the shell with title. My plan is to find a 1927 Model T roadster chassis to put it on. I am in the process of doing a 4" chop. I plan on putting a 383 SBC with 6-71 blower. Use a Powerglide transmission, 9" Ford rear with 3.50 gear, and a 31x16x15 tire on the rear. Fronts to be 26x6x15. Disk brakes all around. Here is how it was when I got it home.
The other picture is how it looks right now.
I am sorry if you are a purist and think chopping a perfectly good Oval shell is sacrilegious. If it makes it any easier, I promise to do a good job. Lol _________________ The Truth can be brutal, but a lie is worse.

While it is a shame to see any vw chopped up, this has the potential to be freakin awesome!
good luck man, just make sure it sits right and you finish it, have you built any other rods/cars before? _________________ If you can't join them, beat them! |

No, no, dude. You're totally doing all those oval window owners a favor: the value of their original/non-chopped ovals just went up a little more. 😊

Thanks for the enthusiasm! I appreciate it. I have built a few cars over the years and been involved in a few others, one an NHRA Pro Stocker. Currently I have a 94 Camaro street/strip car with nitrous. Its a high 10, low 11 quarter miler @126-127 mph. I am aiming for this car to be faster! I'll even add nitrous if I need too!
Can't wait. Since I'm still a newbie to the site would it be appropriate to put this in the Other VW vehicles/Volksrods? I've been following the build projects that TheGreenVW has posted (400HP Single Cab & The V8 Bug)and found them very inspiring. _________________ The Truth can be brutal, but a lie is worse. |

No, don't move it. We need some good old fashioned V8 speed here for entertainment. |

If you were starting with a complete unmolested car that would be one thing but you are starting with a shell. You would have to spend a fortune to put it back to 100% original.
Have fun and post your progress. _________________ Chris

OK. Unless I hear otherwise I'll keep posting here. Here is a few pictures of the first few steps of the chop.I would consider this a slightly modified Capella style chop. I chose this because I didn't want to cut up the roof section and I like the rake that is formed by going this route. I made the cut on the rear section high enough that the rear deck lid will still lay in the stock location.
Also I plan on using the rear engine area as a small storage area and convert it to a trunk. I need it to be weather tight so I would like to find someone to trade the rear deck lid, since this one has louvers. It's a shame because this one is in such remarkable shape. Just sand, prime, and paint. Yes, I know they are rare and ridiculously expensive. I'll see how things go. In the mean time here are a few more pics.

That is not a W decklid. It is a '58 -'63 decklid so it is not that valuable and I doubt anyone would trade a W decklid for it. _________________ Chris

Thank you for letting me know that. I did not realize the bottom of the deck lid being different until you brought it up. I am not dead set on a "W" lid, if I had too I would use the style that is on it now. The main thing to me is to have a solid lid with no louvers. I think the bottom of the lid is more clear in this picture.

The title usually follows the pan/chassis. Where did your pan go?
My advice is to get it titled in your name now if you haven't. Woe and sadness may await you if you hold off until you are done.

New title in hand. No problem.
Here are a few more pics of the progress.
Cutting relief for reshaping the post for the windshield.
Here is one welded up. Also making new edge to match the factory look.
Here is a piece to help taper the factory round and blend into the windshield
post.
Here's one welded in place to get an idea what I'm after.

Every little bit helps.
Here is some pics of fabbing the B pillar area.

I have been busy working on the Roof section.First taking the surfaces to bare metal. Then primer and a coat of paint.
I noticed that a portion of the roof seemed to buckle by giving a light touch, so I decided to reinforce the area from the inside. As well as weld tabs to mount the overhead console.
Began working on an overhead console to hold my switches, have cockpit style overhead lighting, as well as a 6.5 inch subwoofer and a pair of one inch tweeters. Here is a trial fit. Final coat of paint after I know things are right.
I have run the wires to hook it all up.
At this point the roof section is setting back on the main section of the body and is being prepped to weld it back together.
I'll keep posting as I make progress. _________________ The Truth can be brutal, but a lie is worse. |

What are you doing with the air intake louver section under the rear window? |

I will fill the section in solid to keep it weather tight.
I will reuse part of it on the front section to help let out the engine heat.
I will mount it in the upper part of nose just before the door seam. _________________ The Truth can be brutal, but a lie is worse. |

Well I have the roof section back on and welded in place.
Here are a few shots of what it looks like now.
Here is how the inside turned out.
This shows the angle iron welded in place. I plan on having a platform or shelf that will hold a Sub Woofer and rear speakers. The angle iron will help support these.
As I mentioned before I plan on using the original engine compartment as a small trunk/storage area and want it to be weather tight. So here I am closing things up.
I'll keep things moving. Starting on the doors next! _________________ The Truth can be brutal, but a lie is worse. |

I have started working on the driver side door. I wanted to make sure it was at least as strong as from the factory. I will be reinforcing parts of the chopped door section with 1/4" round steel rod welded in place.
Here are a few pics that show the steps I used for the door.I'm sure there are other ways that may be better, but this is what worked for me.
I have new door seals coming and want to make sure everything mates up the way it should before I go any farther. Then I will duplicate it all for the passenger side door. I am sorry some of the pictures are out of order. Hopefully you still get the idea of what is going on. _________________ The Truth can be brutal, but a lie is worse. |

Thank you, I appreciate that.
My hope is to inspire others and help restore the passion of doing these kind of projects. The motor sports related field seems to be losing a large number of people for different reasons. I hate to see that happen. I think sites like theSamba help keep things going!
By the way I will be heading to Amsterdam next month. Whats the Volkrods scene like in that area tisius? _________________ The Truth can be brutal, but a lie is worse.
