I had done a full fuel tank re-seal when I first got my van but was thinking it was time to do it again, Every fill-up meant a gassy smell that was strongest on the passenger side. Tonight, with the help of an inspection mirror, I finally found the source. Looks like the work of a rodent?
I was just barely able to snake my arm in that narrow space and replace the chewed up hose. I'm so happy that I don't have to drop the tank after all. It makes it worth all the scratches on my arm.

I finally got around to mounting the rear wheel well skirts I bought from Busdepot years ago. I was never very happy with the way they mounted until I got a set of flares from Terawagon. With the flares, the skirts can be mounted between the flare and the wheel well edge, hiding the outside edge of the skirts which otherwise show.
I have a set of front skirts also, but as the flare only covers part of the wheel well edge the skirt still shows and is kind of ugly, so for now I'll just be using the rears. Unfortunate as the front skirt might have insulated some road noise.
At least the rears will help keep the area around the Syncro fuel tank/sender/filter a little cleaner. _________________ Currently:

I noticed that the battery check light for the auxiliary was in the yellow, sometimes even in the red, so wondered if it was getting a charge or having some other problem. PO installed it incorrectly, such that the auxiliary circuit was only getting 6v and blew a couple of alternators in the process. Sadly, his mechanic ever figured it out.
Anyway, it was showing about 11v of charge.
I ran the motor and it was showing 13.8 so I figured that was OK.
The battery has never sat in the box properly. The door doesn't sit flush and and it blocks the seat from swiveling. Turns out the battery terminals are too tall to fit under the door.
And they are far enough forward that they don't touch it but then there is all that wiring to deal with.
I took it out, reseated all the connections, tightened things down that weren't, and replaced it. Took a short drive and now the LED shows green. I didn't have my meter handy to test it again but I can do that tomorrow. If the battery is fading, I know to keep the height in mind.
If these terminals could be attached on the side, it might work. The top of the battery fits, it's just the terminals that are too high.
This all began when I was trying to light the fridge (which failed me for the first time). Now to figure that out.
I tried to find the manufacturing code tag under the seat but I couldn't feel anything under the pedestal and there is no way to see under there without an inspection mirror which I don't have. _________________ Currently -> Frida: 87 Tizian Red (mostly) Vanagon GL Westfalia w/ 2.0L ABA conversion

Use your cell phone instead of the mirror.
Also they make battery terminal adapter, such as this

If I can't find the tag, what do I use the cell phone for?

If I can't feel it, I have no idea what to take a picture of. Maybe a mirror would help.
Those look just like what I envisioned. Never got a moment to look. Thanks. _________________ Currently -> Frida: 87 Tizian Red (mostly) Vanagon GL Westfalia w/ 2.0L ABA conversion

Just put the cell phone under there and take serval picture in different area.
I have removed serval of those seat bases and there was no tag. There is a sticker below the fuse panel on mine that has code information. _________________ 1990 Wolfsburg Carat with new poptop.

I hear you but I can't find anything by touch. I think it's not there. And the paper tag is gone with the wind… _________________ Currently -> Frida: 87 Tizian Red (mostly) Vanagon GL Westfalia w/ 2.0L ABA conversion

Installed in dash GPS , Garmin Nuvi 44LM, carved the ashtray a little bit and spliced in a 12v outlet behind the dash , the cover hides it completely and it wedges nicely in a couple of grooves I carved in the ashtray. The power button is right on top.

[how do you get it to pop up?]
I wish it popped up!
You have to lift it up and lean it back , once it's there it wedges in nicely and doesn't move, the GPS is about 3mm wider than the opening so I was able to file a shallow groove that holds it in position.
When the lid is closed the unit is sitting right on top of the stereo[/quote]

What did I do to my Vanagon today (1989 model)?
(Yesterday, I completed a long list of items [previously listed])
Well, early this morning, using a mirror, I looked at that crazy location of the Oil Pressure Switch next to the Water Pump .........
Wow! VW had to make something difficult so the owner would have to bring it to them....
I guess the easiest way to remove and replace that oil pressure switch is to remove the V-belts to allow more working room!
Thoughts? _________________ '84 Vanagon Tin-top, ALH TDI. 1989 Tin-top

Took a little drive up a local ridge overlooking where we live to start breaking in the zero mile crate Zetec.
Runs real nice, however somewhere along the way my a/c fans have stopped working. Hopefully something simple, electrical is not my favorite. (edit: forgot to put the two fan fuses back in )
Still waiting for the final blessing from Jim on the latest tune, then I can start putting some serious miles on her!
This is our highway configuration. I need to make up my mind on the new rough road tires. KO2s on CLKs maybe or something else on Rheins.

^^ looking good ^^
I had to charge the battery on my '88 Westfalia today, since it hasn't been started for a few weeks. I did this carpet installation some time ago, wanted to share. I installed it to protect the rear bed cushion. Picked up the carpeting from Lowes. I also installed it in the rest of the camper, including the shelves, closet and storage compartments.

Held 51 minutes hostage so I could change out the alternator, two drive belts, check battery water level, slam a beer and put the tools away. _________________ Peace, Regis |

Found some LED bulb replacements on that internet place... Got a couple types of whites, and a set of orange ones. I got a good overall feel for the backup lights, that seemed to be an adequate upgrade, but the orange ones for turn signals barely used any currant, so they flashed fast, as if there is a bulb out. Didn't like that much. Back to old bulbs for turns, for now. Tried the orange ones in the red-running lights, even though the lens is red, they look orange, and are not any brighter. Took those back out too. _________________ '87 Westy 'Flossie','86 Westy 'R1','86 tintop GL - Subi2.2 'J2','83.5 stock tintop L 'ZoomBus','74 Karmann Ghia, '63 Notch |
