Yes, the merged header was a pleasant surprise.
The pipes that are connected to cylinders 2&4 had to be shortened about 1". The pipe that connects to cylinder 1 had to be cut 1-1/2", while the pipe connected to cylinder 3 was good. I had to drill out the flange holes two drill bit sizes larger to fit a 36hp head.
The flanges on cylinders 2&4 were perfect (orientation), but I did have to cut, rotate, and re weld the flanges on cylinders 1&3.
For me it was well worth it, 1-3/8" tube perfect for 36hp, small header flange, and now I have several muffler options available to me.
Raw header was $140, ceramic coating $140, so for $280 I have an exhaust system I'm really happy with, which is one of the downsides to 36hp engines (lack of exhaust choices or big $$$). |

I removed the speedwell blower and went with just the 30pict1 carb. I had a hard time getting the carb and blower to work well together. I'm sure if I changed to a 28pci carb I would have had more success.
The engine just ran so well without the blower that I sold it. The car runs extremely well, revs fast, and is smooth. I honestly give the credit to fully balancing the crank assembly (crank, rods, flywheel, pressure plate, and pistons). Mr. Motorhead's cam and heads do not hurt either!
I did upgrade to an 019 distributor from Glenn Ring, which also helped. My next mod is getting rid of the merged header and moving to a vintage speed abarth system. The 1-3/8 merged header is too much and the single quiet pack looks like crap...doesnt match the design of the car.
I do not have any dyno numbers, but it is much improved over stock. I did not have my GPS but I easily got past 80mph on the speedometer this past weekend for a bit.
I'll upload a new picture shortly |

I removed my merged header and single quiet pack. I'll probably put them for sale on here shortly.
The merged header was too much for my engine...if I would have increased the stroke/bore it would have been great.
I went with a Vintage Speed Abarth style muffler with j-tubes and the heat risers. The install kicked my butt because I was being hard headed, once I gave in, it went in easily.
I can't believe how much difference it makes, the engine runs much better and the sound is nice. Much better low end torque and throttle response.
Vintage Speed products are top notch, I'll post a pic soon. |

Latest picture of the engine:
I'm in the process of swapping to Okrasa heads and running dual IDF's. Manifolds were supplied by Speedwell and the heads came from WW. Mr. Motorhead is doing the port/chamber work for me.
Distributor is a VJ4 BR8 from Glenn, big improvement over the 009
The engine runs great, but I have a habit of changing things! I could have built a 200hp engine for how much money I have in this little 36, but it has been fun. Once I start installing the heads/carbs I'll post some install pics |

you will love it with the dual port heads and IDF's.
36 or 40 idfs with small vents?
36 dells would have been awesome as well. nice with the additional progression port.

The current setup compression is 7.5:1 static
I'm not sure what the final chamber volume will be on the Okrasa heads
40IDF's, small vents |

I got my Okrasa heads from Matthew at AircooledResearch. They look great.
I also decided to move forward with a pair of Italian 36IDF's versus 40's.
I'll post some pics soon. |

If I wasn't going to be collecting some ratio rockers at the weekend I'd be very jealous of your heads and carbs...... _________________ Richard

What jetting did you end up with for a 30 PICT carb? I was wondering about a 30 PIC carb as a possible mild upgrade. My engine is stock so your setup wouldn't be exactly right, but it should be close. _________________

I have only played with the main jet, the rest are stock. I'm currently running a 122.5 main jet but it is rich. I have gone up to a 127.5 with the blower, but I need to step down to a 120.
I believe it comes stock with a 115 or 117.5, which is what I ran on my stock 36.
I went with the 30pict carb for ease of parts, cost (rebuilt 28PCI's are ridiculous), and I wanted an electric choke.
The original choke knob on my dash is used to power my electric fuel pump. Looks just like the original knob
Of course, in a couple of weeks I'll be pulling the heads and installing the Okrasa's and dual 36 IDFs |

Thanks for the info. I would have guessed richer. I take it your starting point was a stock 1967 type 30 PICT with the power enrichment circuit? I'm eyeing the aftermarket 30 PIC with a manual choke, thinking that there may be 1 or 2 horsepower to free up. _________________

Mine is an aftermarket version too, bought from www.aircooledresearch.com
It's a replica of the version used on 1500's
It's a Brazilian version, not Chinese. |

Is there any benefit to straight cut gears? Did they ever quiet down a bit? Do you have any photos of the vintage speed abarth exhaust installed?
Great car.
Thanks |

The general consensus is that straight cut gears are not needed until you run dual valve springs. However, the stock gears cause thrust wear and in my opinion, unnecessary friction. Straight cut gears remove this.
I cannot even hear mine...the noise I originally heard was from the blower. There is no disadvantage to running them.
Here is the best picture I have of the VS Abarth installed
