Came across the thread this A.M. and saw the vast interest in the Supers, so, figured I contribute.
I got into Supers back in like 1986, thing is I was only 15/16 years old and saw the simularities to the Porsche 911 and then got all into the VW/Porsche Thing...
So, what I saw was the potential of a "real' U.S. Driving car for the Speed Ratings that the U.S. has for the Bugs/Super's 0-80MPH Telemetry that it runs and operates within....
What is cool about it, what came out over the past 2 decades, the German Look Supers.... Only thing I have to rant and rave on is the bases of how close the World was in the 70's to having a "Good Over All Well Rounded" Grocery Getter... Price, Power, MPG. Emissions, I know........ Another Story....
Anyway, Performance and Braking of the Super's once the German Kit is Installed is a Big Change in the Super's overall personaility, Disk(F & R), Bigger Sway Bar and Added on the Rear, Lower and Tigher Suspension(F & R), in all I can let you know is if you never have been in one driving, or riding in a budget build German and yes they can be done, you have to check it out. Totally Another World in Comparisons..... Power Plant, another story there as well, but over allbolt on improvements that have surfaced as of lates, amazing and way fun impliments on the Super Chassis Platform.......
Mine, Completed last year, final version in the works...... Has, budget build wheels, Topline Front End Kit, Disk(F&R), Bigger Sway Bar on Front w/Added on the Rear, and nice wide treads to aid in cornering and braking......
Sorry for the Long Post, Good Coffee and a Key Point in the Super's in the 21 Century, what you can ad on, FYI, there are from what I have found out 3 Company's that do German Look Conversion Components Suspension wise.... From Bolt On To Machine Work..... Bottom line for me, to stay in the Hobby of the VW World, I wanted to work towards a Goal, so, wanted to be safe, one of the Reasons why I like Supers, simple Handling Traits, plus I don't jam my fingers into the front wind shield getting in when grabbing the steering wheel... that always a bummer...... Here's a picture of 1974 Super Beetle Sun Bug from my gallery. I bought it in October of 2012. Most of its life was spent in northern California, but it started out its first few years in Oregon.

Here is my German Look 74.
Love the car. Comfortable, handles great, stops awesome and easy to maintain.
In fact, I drove it to work this morning. _________________ All it takes is a little imagination, some mechanical ability, and neighbors who mind their own business
