Put some new seats in the Thing today.
Came out of an 05 Neon. Actually pretty comfortable. The stock Neon seat track is almost exactly the same width as the stock VW seat track. Made it very easy to adapt to the Thing.

Well, took some time to finally powder coat some tin for her car yesterday. I have pretty much collected duplicates of almost every piece. I'm trying to get all the tin done before I pull the engine so I can get it in and out within a weekend. Coming along nicely. Mocked it up on another engine I have.

So last weekend I finally got sick of the engine being ugly. I went to tune it up for the coming show season. Took the right side carb apart to clean it and decided I was better off rebuilding and installing the single 34 I'd been meaning to put in it for years. My wife (Shannon) always hated having to warm it up (no chokes) and it just plain ran like crap with the dual carbs.
This was the start
This is with the new carb and 034. It ran like a dream. While I was in there I put a few pieces of the powder coated tin in.
When I went in for the evening I decided to pull the engine the next day and replace all the tin.
Not quite complete yet

Dropped the new exhaust off at the sand blaster today. Should have it back in a day or two and I'll coat it and put it on. New carb bushings are on the way.
Worked on the engine some more this weekend. Pulled it back out and painted the engine compartment.

Bigger then my cabinet. Plus time consuming. Dropped it off, the strut springs for my Super, and 2 intake manifolds. Blasting isn't hard at all, but it takes a lot of time. When I did the rear trailing arm on my bug it took me 3 hours. He did the 2nd one in 15 mins. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Yep 3 hours. The car sat for about 20 years when I bought it. It was heavily pitted and needed a lot of work.
It's powder coated in silver vein. Helps hide the pitting. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Did a little powder coating yesterday. Only had a few hours to work on it so I didn't get as much done as I'd hoped.
Color matched the dipstick handle, and finished the sled tins. Also did the vavle covers, and the bails. The covers are beige and the bails which aren't pictured are teal.
I have a set of throttle bushings on the way. Should be here tomorrow. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

I hope the show season includes a trip to Tipp City, Ohio.
Just 57 shopping days left
PS. There's a quarter car wash just a block from the show. |

I gave up on getting the Solex 34 I had to work. Took it apart, cleaned it several times, rebushed it, etc. Refused to idle. Shopped around for both new and rebuilt used. Found an Empi 34 pict 3 on Amazon cheap. I was shocked to find that it had 92 reviews and 90% of them were 4 or 5 stars and people were happy with it. For $114 I figured I'd take the risk. It arrived quick (2 days) and I was pretty impressed with it. It seems well built, and a pretty decent copy of the German 34. It came with a 127.5 idle jet and a 55 main jet installed. It also came with a 130 idle and a 60 main. I switched to the bigger jets, both to compensate for the 10% ethanol, and for the exhaust I installed. Bolted it on, and it started right up, idled and ran great with very minimal adjustment needed. I've driven it around town a bit and been very pleased with it so far. Now I just need to get the powder coated air cleaner and valve covers on before the Bug Out this weekend. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Nice job! What kind of muffler is that and where did you get it? I saw something similar on eBay, I think it was JBugs brand, ceramic coated(?). Probably not super-high quality, but I'm thinking it would be good enough for the limited use my Thing gets. _________________ Mike B. |

The engine is a beige. The exhaust is the Empi clone of the tri mill exhaust. I had it blasted and cerakoted it. It is a little loud, but my wife likes the look of it a lot better then the old header system that just looked awful. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

So I finally got it all back together. Went to take it to the Bug Out, and made it a little less then a mile into our 191 mile trip before it died. Limped it home, about 100 yards at a time, while my friend Chad and I tried to diagnose it. We quickly realized it was starving itself of fuel (float bowl was empty). Changed the needle and still had the same result. After I got it home, we hoped in my Ghia and head to the Bug Out with Chad who took his Buggy. When we got there I decided I'd go through the entire fuel system on the Thing when we got back.
Monday morning I pulled the tank, drained it, and cleaned it. 4 lug nuts and a little water. Sloshed it for 30 straight mins. It was really in bad shape. Lots of rust and sediment. Replaced the missing sock, and the petcock which someone had cut short. Replaced all the rubber hoses, and the in line filter. Replaced the pump. Put it all back together and it fired right up and ran great.
I should've done that when we first bought it. Not sure why I didn't. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980
