Not me. VW engines are tougher than people think, build them right and stay the f*ck out of detonation land and they live forever. I suspect some can't pay the weight penalty of having a watercooled engine, for them making the original engine better works. _________________ Build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=212747

If the Subaru idea is already on the table, I'd say do it. You'll be way ahead in the power dept in stock form. Add more boost and you'll be well on your way to reaching your goals.
I'm an avid aircooled turbo guy with a car that fits your criteria other than the cruise rpm, mine is more like 3500@75 mph, but I'd still recommend subie for a fresh start. Water jackets are so much more forgiving when boost is involved. |
^^^This. How many other folks who've daily-driven turbocharged VWs would go with a Subaru if they had to do it again? I'd be thousands of dollars ahead, and wouldn't have to worry about watching gauges or agonizing over whatever new noises pop up from time to time. |
x3 i am glad i made the change. _________________ Never look down at anybody unless you are helping them up..

the way I see it is it's no worse than any resto-mod if the conversion is done properly.
funny...how many turbo guys had to cut this or trim that to make it fit? "purist" car? well then it better be bone stock with date coded components....
the reality is it's yours...you have to be happy with it. resale? give it a rest...enjoy the car you want.
here is my bus:
this was my first go around, and I hate the coolant jug. my later conversions have a way nicer set up and I will change mine as soon as I am due for a coolant flush. other than that, I don't care how much you hate the swap, but tell me that engine doesn't look like it belongs there....it's a clean swap when you take your time and address the details.... _________________

Thanks for the correction. I used to be a nice guy, then I ruined it by exposing myself to the public. |

The easiest way to avoid pissing off the purists is to avoid the purists' playground (car shows, etc). Lol. Build it, drive it and enjoy it; that's the best satisfaction you can get, bar none. |

A mild Aircooled VW stroker with a turbo will most likely obtain your goals, but you will have $6k-$10K in the drivetrain. Anything I ever own will have an Aircooled VW engine in it. |
Those are the numbers I was expecting from a Subaru build. If I can hit my target for that kind of cash I see an ACVW as a very viable option. Can you elaborate on your comments regarding the total cost? |
It's going to depend on the quality of parts in the build, and if they are new, or used. Also if you are doing the build 100%, or paying someone 100%. That estimate is just the parts without any labor. You could use CB Performance's Engine Builder Kits as a rough guide. The upper kits are around $5k for the long lock. And yes, you want an Aluminum Case. Induction has many different variables of cost as well. Keep doing some research on what power level may reach your goal, then find the type/quality parts that can obtain it to get a firm estimate.
As far as a 5 speed, the Subaru Gears r&p is around $1500. Unless you have the tools/knowledge to swap it out, you will have to pay the labor for an entire disassembly/rebuild. A Berg Type 1 5 speed is up past $5k. Turbos can sometimes have their cake, and eat it too. Taller gears are able to be pulled, and slightly shorter than stock ratios can usually create a balance of drive ability, and performance in a 4 speed. You still will likely have $1500-$2500 in a Type 1 Transaxle built to take some abuse. |
