I'll re-phrase my suggestion. Disconnect and clean every connection, especially where there is rust. Make sure that you are grounded to clean or shiny metal.

Just fixed my reverse lights today, thanks for the tip. Here are the steps I followed, whether they are wrong, right or indifferent, it fixed my problems.
Step 1. Checked the obvious fuse in fuse box being its an auto tranny
Step 2. Checked the bulbs
Step 3. Removed Auto Shifter housing and took pictures.
Step 4. Removed all wires to plastic switch and cleaned.
Step 5. Loosened switch just a tad. Moved switch a hair closer to contact
Step 6. Cleaned contacts on switch and pryed out a tad with a knife.
Step 7. Smiled at my working tail lights and the money saved to buy some more beer
Step 8. While drinking my beer order new switch from German Supply

| I know this is an old post and i own a 91 vanagon, so i searched and searched and came across this thread. My reverse lights aren't working, i checked the fuse and it's fine installed brand new bulbs and it's not working.... So it's time to test the reverse switch, do you guys happen to know where the switch is located for a 91auto vanagon |

First place I'd look is in the shifter up front, usually it's part of the neutral start switch.

I didn't think to reopen the topic on this topic. This has been one of those little gremlin problems that hasn't really been an issue with more important problems coming first, but with most of those problems having been dealt with i'm jumping back into this problem.

Strange question. I just checked the voltage coming out at the bulb locations and i'm getting anywhere from 9v to 13v depending on if I have the key on or not. Should I be getting voltage with the key off at the bulb connections?

OK I've done some more digging and I think I've figured out my problem. The metal piece that goes between the two points is pretty messed up(pic attached). Does my logic sound good to you guys and where can I get a replacement piece? I took the wires out of the plastic bit and connected them together and they came on like they're supposed to, which to my mind points back to the metal bit.

Bull Shit .
The contacts on the shifter lever have 0 to due with damaging the flex plate.
The parts are worn and that's the problem period!
I replaced quite a few of these when the vehicles were only 4-5 years old.
Neutral safety switch problems are common on ALL old cars.

Ok the switch contact I believe is the problem not the actual switch itself (note second picture). I've got a friend looking into a 411/412 automatic colomn to see if it has the same parts. Part #211919265 is what i'm looking for I think.

May not be the problem, but that thing is worn out.
To test the switch.
Hook the wires back up to the switch and run a screwdriver across the two contacts and see if the lights come on. Lights come on the switch is good.
To test the contact.
Use an ohm meter and measure the resistance between #14 211 919 265 park neutral contact, the one that is all worn out and the shifter. There should be no continuity (contact) between the brass rubbing block and the shifter.

I will do some more testing hopefully soon. Any ideas on how to get the neutral contact off the gear selector so I can attempt to rebuild it? Does it just slide up and off the shifter?
