My brother is going to look at an 83 ej22 converted Westy today, he sent me the CL ad and it has this picture in it:
Never seen this before, curious what's going on here?
Thanks |

The front grill of a subaru? He should take a picture of the engine bay to let us see what's going on. _________________ '81 Westfalia Subaru EJ22

The real question is why they cut that huge hole in the rear. Did they mount a rear radiator?? _________________ '81 Westfalia Subaru EJ22

That's one possibility...would be weird. I am thinking maybe the person has cobbled together some kind of homebrew cooling system instead of getting the stock firewall-forward parts from a later van and doing it the standard way.
In another picture of the front end I notice the lower radiator grill mod has not been done. |

That "thing" was for sale a couple weeks ago here in Oly for less than half that price _________________ Casey--

When I did my conversion I didn't cut the lower radiator hole but my radiator is in front like the later vans. Now that you've mentioned this, I'm fairly certain that this is a rear radiator version. Some people have had good luck with that. There is plenty of room on an aircooled conversion to fit a radiator back there because the transmission sits further forward than the watercooled transmission. It would be much easier to bleed the air from the system with the radiator in the rear as well.... _________________ '81 Westfalia Subaru EJ22

Ya, turns out it was a total POS. Guy doesn't know anything about it, trying to obfuscate the fact that he just bought it in the last few weeks, selling because "it doesn't have AC," has no documentation on the recent rebuild, supposedly the PO had the motor rebuilt "1000 miles ago" but he also drove it out here from North Dakota then sold it immediately? Seller is describing some kind of weird dual fan thing in the rear (hence the vent) as a standard thing. Backfiring, weak when running. More rust than advertised.
I'm thinking dude has major buyer's remorse and is trying to get out of it quick. Or he paid a lot less and was thinking it will be an easy flip. |

Haha, I remember seeing this thing pop up in a thread from a few weeks ago (when it was for sale in Oly or wherever) and thought, "Man, that's cheap for an EJ22 Westy, even with the weird grill/cooling in the back". Clearly he thought so too...bet he was going for the flip. |

Thank him for his time and let him know the mod can be found in the fail thread. Yuk |
