If I didn't already have one. Someone go get this portable Norcold chest fridge; a little older but these things last a long time. $100 is a bargain!

Looking forward to seeing all you guys!

I've been very much entrenched building the house. It's getting close, but still so far away. Hopefully putting together a work play weekend towards the end of the month!

Onwards to silver falls state park! I'll be showing up on Saturday in the am due to pigs and goats in hot weather.

Bottoms up!

Hello PDX!

I'm in town from KY for a few months as the wife took a contact nursing job. Before hit the road again (early Aug) I'm hoping to do a little work on the van and it would be nice to have a driveway to work in vice the street in downtown PDX. Shoot me a PM if you might be able to help out or know of a co-op garage.

Enjoy the gathering at Silver Falls; wish we knew sooner!

Can't wait to go next year, and now we're all revved up to go to the next Portland get-together. Very Happy

Thanks for sharing the pics Darin. It was great meeting you and your wife. Great work on your van too!

(p.s. - anyone find a men's wedding ring while they were packing up? Confused )

Great to meet you and your family, Rick! And thanks, we've had so much fun working on the van. You gave me some great ideas for new projects, too.

Crud, sorry about the ring!

I'm sure most of you are already aware but just in case, Portland Vanagons Facebook group is having a meet down in Pacific City on Saturday July 2nd.

Last time we had about 9 or 10 vans, it'd be great to see and meet more local vans.

OK Portland folks. I am in desperate need here. My 1980 air-cooled has been sitting at Halsey Automotive for weeks, and no one has looked at it. And if they do, I have a feeling they won't be able to do anything about it for another, who knows how many weeks.

So I need an air-cooled mechanic to look at my van to figure out what it going on!

Two issues:

1. on the way up to Mt Hood, only made to Sandy. Lost a bunch of oil, and I can't figure out where its coming from.

2. loud clicking noise from somewhere near the torque plate. And NO, its not the CV joints. I know what that sounds like, and this is not it. It will not make this clicking noise when parked in the driveway. Imagine you take two drum sticks and strike them together. That is the noise.

Need help on this, but don't want to be sent to another garage where my van will sit for weeks before being looked at.

Thanks. Your efforts will be rewarded with copious amount of beer.

Torque plate? Is there another name for this? Can you take a picture of it?

Nearby shop that works on air-cooled --- Always VDub at 1824 Se 50th

503-235-2757 .... M-F 8:30-5:30 .... Sat 10-2

Call and ask for ball park repair time.

Tell Tom at Halsey that you need it done faster and that you're taking it to another shop. He may speed up the process.

Ps -- I have no personal experience with work quality at Always. Just know air-cooled are their specialty.

Realized your van/bus is not with you. So no pics. Maybe you can use this to help me out with Torque plate.

How many miles since you changed the oil?
Did you get into the oil strainer shown here?
Do you have hydraulic lifters in that 77 engine.
If not hydraulic lifters. How many miles since last valve adjustment?
How old are the valve cover seals?

Are you interested in working on your van? If yes, Then you will find more help on those links I sent you around page 34 or 35.
You have a type 4 aircooled motor. But I suppose it doesn't help you with finding a mechanic.

You might be better off leaving it with Tom at Halsey then doing damage driving it around. Call Ashley at Always Vdub and see how backed up he is.
You got Traftons too. And I know a great mechanic in Mulino.

Every Type IV engine owner should know this!!!

If you over tighten the Oil Strainer bolt, you will brake the engine case!

There is a Oil strainer in there.
TORQUE THE STRAINER BOLT TO NO MORE THAN 9 FT. LBS.

Xevin, perhaps I should elaborate.

Regarding the torque plate, its in the bell housing near the flywheel.

Totally separate issue from the oil issue.

Also, recently had an engine from another air-cooled van installed into my van. Forgot to update my van info here. Will do that now.
