Thanks for the advice, some good points there. Before i do that, I have been putting back the parts that were off the engine when i bought it and basically getting a list together of stuff that i don't have. Couple of questions i have that you guys could maybe answer. The Crankcase ventilation, (hope thats what its called), i haven't seen many engines with this on, is this a common thing?.
My next one, what do you think of the condition of the heater boxes and ducts? is this something that can be repaired?

If it were mine...

The motor is about as simple as anything, just putzy plus a few technical things you have to pay attention too.

I would tear it down completely and put it back together clean with whatever new or good used parts it needs. Thats the only way to know for sure what you have.

Use a brass wire brush and have at it on those heater boxes. Once done soak them in rust converter. How do the levers move on the heater junctions?

When satisfied the rust is dealt with paint them with some hi-temp VHT paint.

So, since my last post ive managed to achieve i locked engine, not sure why, so here goes the tear down. Never gone down this road before, so it should be good learning process. Heres some pictures of what i've found so far,

Being new to this, what condition would make the right head look like that?

Looks like something got in the cylinder at one time. Can you turn the engine over now?

Since you removed your Type 4 heads, I think it would be a good idea to have a close look at the valve seats, guides and springs. You never know what you'll find:

Heres what i found on the other side, lots of junk in there and a broken ring.
Both pieces of the ring were still attached to the cylinder.

Must have had some serious heat to do that hey?, damn shame, they kept the inside pretty clean, must have just ran it hard, and not bothered with the engine.

Hopefully you can make it out from the pics, the side of the cylinder (piston) has a worn V into the side of it.

Picture is blurry. Can't make it out.

Been a bit since the last post. Since then i have stripped the engine down, after each step i kept on checking to see if the engine would turn over, no such luck. Until, that is, i split the case. It opened up about an 1/8 in then turned. Once the two half's were separated i found that one of the main bearings had become seized to the crankshaft. How this happened i,m still not sure. I found part of one of the cam shaft bearings to be broken away, so maybe part of that has somehow got in there, heres some pictures,

Been a while since the last post. I originally had plans to rebuild the engine. As that was going on, another bus came up, same year as mine with a running engine. The body needed a lot of work, so i took the engine out with the plan of putting it in my original bus. Before i did that i checked it the best i could and got it up and running. The po must have liked his sealant or whatever that blue stuff is.

With the engine and transmission out, https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/thumbnails/1523287.jpg
(that was an experience being my first engine drop), i was ready to start looking at changing seals and giving it an half decent clean. Pushing the donor back up the driveway
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/thumbnails/1523286.jpg
I decided not go to far into stripping it down, basically because of experience and not wanting to get into something difficult. Im pretty much a complete novice at this point, learning everything as i go.

I have changed the rear main seal, the oil filler gasket and the oil cooler seals. I have to change the oil pressure switch as i have no continuity between the electrical tab and the body. This switch should be normally closed, correct?. Everything i've changed or taken off has been cleaned and where necessary primed and painted. I've replaced the fan shroud studs that go into the engine with regular bolts. This should make it easier to get off with the heat exchangers in place. As of now the shroud is in place and the heater flaps for this are being cleaned. I have replaced the fan bolts with regular allen key bolts, since the last ones were a little stripped, making one of them fun to get out!.
I decided to give the gas tank a once over by having it coated inside. wouldn't call it the greatest job vie ever seen and to be honest, i may have been better to just leave it as it was, but i started reading some threads on the subject, got a newbe panic on that it needed doing and went ahead with it. As it was out already i finished the outside after sanding out any rust spots. I applied some rust protector/inhibitor primer, then painted it with Rustoleum. Turned out not too bad. I applied some foam tape in the areas where the original had come off, put it back in place and changed all the fuel lines except the filler hose. This seemed in pretty good condition so i changed the clamps and carried on.

My plan is to get the engine back together, test it while its still out, check for possible leaks/problems and then put it in the bus.

Managed to get a couple of things done since the last post. Got the fan put back on. I wanted to change the torx bolts to allen key heads. Got a couple of sizes, but on was just a touch shorter and the other one just slightly longer. The short one wouldn't reach the other side of the fan hub an the longer one ended up nearly touching the seal. So in the end, the original ones were cleaned up and put back in.

Got the thermostat flaps cleaned up, rust all sanded off and primed.

I think i have the wrong pins for the heater box flaps. From pictures ive seen both are straight, but i have one that is dog legged on the end, is this how it should be?.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Thought too long on cleaning and painting the original engine tin screws, but came conclusion that i'd be better off starting with new m6 hex heads, so i gave them a light sanded and painted them black.

My aim and the start of this engine was to change the necessary seals and a few other things then try to get it on the road at least for one camping trip this year. Maybe i should have done this sooner, but i pulled the spark plugs for a look tonight and it looks like to me that the piston rings are worn and need replacing, any input on this would be appreciated.
