Hey Gang.

I am about to upholster the interior panels in my '61 mango. I initially bought 3M Super 77 spray adhesive although I was since told that I should use something more heat stable. Super 77 appears to be heat stable up to 62C (~145F). I can't imagine the interior would get hotter than that on a sunny day (By the way, it's not a daily driver. The only time it'd sit in the hot sun is at car shows). Anyway, I was told I should use the 3M 8088 at minimum. Thing is, this stuff is twice the price and you have to use a shit-ton of it.

Has anyone used Super 77 on their panels? I'm looking at you Texas, Arizona, Florida, and SoCal bus owners. Any wrinkling or peeling?

Thanks.

Get the best. I'm in South Texas and have tried MANY different adhesives. That have ALL proven inadequate. I'll never use a spray can adhesive again. The landau top adhesive is the next on my list should I need adhesive in the future.

3m makes a fabric headliner 90 spray, I used 77 when I made my panels with no issue. next time I will use the fabric 90 headliner just to see, here's a couple pics of the panels I made, I used sqback and bug exterior trim to hide the seams

I have tried all of the 3m spray can adhesives. The vinyl will eventually pull of the backing.

Contact cement was recommended to me by my local upholstery shop. I only had good results when I shot it though a paint gun, shoot both sides then let them tack up. You can't use the low VOC stuff in the green can, well you can... it just wont hold.

Thanks for the feedback...much appreciated. I think I'll get in touch with a couple more upholsterers before I start. I'm going to give the 8088 a shot regardless...I'll start with the kick panels and the rear gate panel. That's probably all that can will do anyway.

90 is better than 77- but it will still peel if the vinyl you're using it on is backed. If your vinyl has the white, meshed backing- it's too porous for anything sold over the counter in an aerosol can.

As said- landau adhesive sprayed from a pressure pot gun is the only way to go: DAP Weldwood Contact Adhesive.

Do the 3M spray can adhesives work ok with original material that is being re-glued to a new panel board?

I would only use DAP Weldwood Landau top Adhesive.

Buy a cheap Harbor Freight spray gun to spray it, and mineral spirits for clean up.

This. This is what I was referencing earlier in the thread.

I was thinking of doing this but figured that it was cheaper especially when factoring in my time and the high probability that I will screw this up to simply buy a new set. Best of luck with everything.

A box of these for $13 will get the job done.

I need to glue down my original material in several places and don't want to do it twice, it's fragile. Would the landau cover glue be best?
Also, when flattening the existing cardboard where it has pulled away, any advice other than just putting weight on it? I read somewhere to wet it. Again, it's fragile and not sure the screws won't pull through it so I'd like to flatten it first.

Stocknazi- I've only used the cans for small areas- not for full panel replacements of factory vinyl- but I imagine it would work because it is actually sticking to a lot of residual factory glue.

On the subject of money I can't think of any job that's cheaper to do twice.

There's an infamous phrase coined that sums up doing something right the first time- even at greater expense. Gene Berg said, "cry once."

Wet the back with a spray bottle and lay the panel between two sheets of plywood. Set some weight on top and leave it for a day or two. It will warp again if you don't get it installed pronto, but if you get it screwed down it usually stays flat
