I have just picked up a 66 type one that I want to make a rat rod out of it.
I heard about a deal were you take your left torsion arms and put them on the right and the rights on the left. I guess this move the front wheels forward. I would like to know more about this.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hey busparts, there have been many people that have attempted the "flipped" front end as you described. From what I have heard there are some drivablity/stability/steering problems with this setup. There are other options out there to move the front wheels farther forward for the fenderless volksrod look. Come on over to http://volksrods.com/ and have a look around.

The Thing I did not want to do is cut the front of the bug to move the front beam forward. And that aftermarket stuff is to much for me.
thanks for the pic.

i did not say it could not be done. if you take one(1) tie rod off a beetle you can still drive it,but, dont back up. dr.porsche did this to prove to british that accidents with british drunk soldiers was not caused by a broken tie rod end but rather by being drunk. blow that picture up so you can really see the funny part. there are a lot of safety issues with this.

Unless you move the steering box forward by the same amount as the spindle, you will be altering your steering geometry in a very negative way. You will have so much bumpsteer that it will be a handfull to drive.

ok.. what difference would it make if he was doing it to a post 68 or a 66.

becuse the swap is all the same parts

the bent tie rods compensate for the steering being farther back relative to the wheel center

all mods have some engineering issues, but most factory cars have some aswell
