I am still figuring out stuff about the 1974 Thing I purchased. The person who did the original restoration told me that he painted it a VW color called Raven Green. I have not been able to find that as a VW color in the charts online, and it clearly is not a Thing color. I was wondering if anyone could help me untangle this.
As shown in the attached pictures from the can he used, Raven Green is listed as a 1973 VW color by Nason/Dupont with an ID of 42714 and a code of H5. I can't track either of those numbers down, or, relate those back to any (Thing or non-Thing) VW color. It is a green with yellow in it.

That is Ravenna, not Raven Green, so I don't think that is it. I did see that as well while I was trolling. But it is too yellow.
I agree about the shine. |

Actually, that could be it! The 42714 number matches!
I still can't find out how to get a spray can of this stuff with the one-coat shine for touchup and projects. |

Looks like Ravenna Green to me which does favor yellow with a hint of green. Looks dynamite on the cars it was originally offered -- Karmann Ghia, "Love Bug" special edition standard Beetle, Super Beetle convertible, and Porsche 914. I wanted to buy the last two at different times but didn't get into negotiations fast enough. Looks dynamite on a Thing, too! _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

By the way, Ravenna has nothing to do with raven. Ravenna is a province in Italy. VW used geographic terms in their naming convention of colors over the years such as Shantung Yellow -- Shantung being a province in China. _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

This make help: Ravenna Green L-65K (PPG 2583)
I wanted to paint my Thing in Pop Lilac L-40M, but the painter couldn't prepare de color and did some kind of Barney The Dinosaur color and I like it.
These are some original colors for the Type 181

Yes that's Ravenna green.
It's a beautiful color and very much at home on a thing.
I've reshot my wild westerner so I'm very familiar with the color. I have paint codes and costs somewhere in the build thread down in my sig. _________________ One day as a lion, or a lifetime as lamb

Out of curiosity are Ravenna and Tepeti green different names and codes for the same colour? L-65K vs L-67G. Can anybody link to a picture of a car that is Tepeti? The only thing google has found is this thread. |

I'd further say it was smart to declare those with different codes and names because though similar, they were painted in very different plants for different cars on opposite sides of the world. VW and Westfalia could not even agree on Hanover's Dove Blue- and they were just a few hundred miles apart.. _________________
