I went to hook up the cables to the heat exchangers tonight and found this. With both levers in the off (up) position, the end of the passenger side cable is about 3 inches short of the heat exchanger link and the driver side is about 1” short. The passenger side actually has a piece of coat hanger attached to the bent end of the cable, like the PO tried to bridge the gap (visible in first photo). Are there different cable lengths for early and late buses or maybe my truck (crew cab) has a different cable length than a passenger bus? Can you think of any other issues that would cause a cable to run short like this?

Because the ends are broken off, there should be a ~3" solid smooth section for the bug nut to clamp onto, yours are gone. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Yes and no...., if the cables still move freely I've seen many fixed by twisting a length of mechanics wire tightly around the last lump on the end and continuing the twisty part straight out 3-4" to where the bug nut can clamp on it, the end result opens and closes the valves a few more years and that's what matters. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I had already ordered a set of cables when I saw this response, but when I thought about the time and hassle associated with replacing the cables I figured I would give it a try. After all, if Busdaddy says it is OK, it must be OK.
Here is the result. Works great, nice and smooth, solid.... I'll probably hang on to the cables I ordered just in case, but I think this is going to be a great long-term solution.
