I have a 77 bay. It has been sitting for 12 years. I replaced the starter, the fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel lines , battery battery cable. On the first test run she was running great for 20 minutes and about the first 3 miles. She then then sputtered and would barely run with the peddle to the floor. I was able to get her home with restarting her a few times. in the garage she will run until i try to give her gas. What should I start with? What would cuase this problem after warm up? |

OK, so the tank wasn't full of crap?
Try unplugging the temp sensor #2, it's that single black wire coming from #3 head, if it suddenly runs (although rich) try replacing it.
Next step is a fuel pressure test and a look for vacuum leaks with a smoke tester. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I did drain the tank and it was clear. I had the bus idle for 20 minutes today and was fine until i hit the gas. I did disconnect the temp sensor and now it won't start. |

I've replaced the vacuum hoses, fuel filter and drained and replaced the gas. Still won't start. It was running perfect three days ago. What could have failed to give this issue? |

Plastic block on the points broke and the gap closed up?, or maybe dirty contacts?
Connect a test light between the primary coil terminals and see if it lights when the key is on and blinks when cranking. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

There is an air flap in the intake, it's at the top of the rubber S boot intake.
If your bus back-fired, that door can jam shut, no air flow, no running.
Take the air cleaner off and check that flap opens & closes, you
should be able to do it with your finger, it has a dampening action to it
when it opens/closes. |

1) how much fuel did you put in the tank?
2) put a timing light on it and have someone crank it. Glance to see if the timing is still around 7 to 8 BTDC when it flashes if it flashes. If it does not flash look to an ignition problem.
3) Pour a TEASPOON of gas into the S-boot. Crank it, see if it starts. If it does then you have a fuel problem _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

There are no points. electronic ignition. The tank is half full. the air intake is open. It did back fire a few times but it kept running after. The timing is at 8.5.
Thank you for all the help. |

When I replaced the gas in the system I did include a fuel system cleaner. After many attempts to start the bus is alive again!!!
I think maybe somE varnish in the hard lines may have caused the problem.
Thank you all for your help!
I'm sure I will have many other Questions along the way.
Great to Know I will have such AWESOME help!!
Thank you |

Well the good news is that from a cold start, the bus will start and run at idle perfectly.
The bad news seems to be that during a test ride all is good for a couple of miles, then it will backfire if I try to put any strain on the engine. First any second gear seem OK but third or up a small incline and the fun begins.
After I get home and shut it off it won't restart until the next day.
Why does it seem to only happen when the engine is warmed up? |
