I am getting a squealing noise after about ten minutes of operation. It is definitely motion related and appears to be affected by turning the steering wheel either way, i.e I can make it worse by turning the wheel. Man, everything is new down there, tie rod ends, ball joints, all bushings (properly greased). I did discover the speedometer cable was making contact with the hubcap --drilled a hole for it, but no change. Would wheel bearings be adjusted too tight cause a squealing/squeaking noise? What about the various rubber steering couplers, should those be greased? I am kinda stumped. _________________ 1984 Vanagon GL

Possibly a bearing going out, although a bad bearing tends to be more of a low-pitched "growling"
noise which gets louder as you go faster. Of course, this only shows up when you're driving.
OTOH: Yes, you can and should periodically grease all rubber suspension points.
If this is your problem, you might also hear it when stopped and turning the wheel -or-
jump on the bumper to flex the suspension...any squeaks? Not uncommon, actually.
Dumb question: it's not the PS pump going out -or- complaining about low fluid?
This noise would be from the engine bay, of course...
