It's a VW remanufactured.

D series was one of VW's longest running engine series, from 1966 (actually 1961, but it wasn't called the D block until mid 1965) until 1985, it's the old 40HP (34bhp DIN) 1200cc.

However, with 6 digits and an X on the end, that's remanufactured. Is the original number milled off and this new number punched in the depression?

Anyway, who knows what's been done to the block since VW sold it in the exchange system. Later 1200 blocks are identical to 1300-1600, so they are easy to stick later crank and piston/cylinders into.

I do not know how to fix this. All I can say is it all works fine for me with what I use, Firefox.

Thanks for info.

Would that mean the 385814 would have been the original engine number that has been stamped in the new engine, that is if it was done correctly?

I really don't know where the numbers come from. You can see what VW's intention was, but if that replaced another 1200 D engine, it would have had 7 number digits on the serial number.

Really once it was run through the reman shop, then number really doesn't mean anything. As for working on the engine, you'd want to look for what features the engine actually has - single or dual oil pressure relief valves, 8mm or 10mm head studs, 6mm or 8mm oil pump, stuff like that.
