So..... In the name of cheap templates, I picked up a 24" section of 8" heating duct and two end caps.
If it were a fuel tank it would be 5.22 gallons........

The 8" fits just fine above the transmission.... On the left side.
As you get near the starter that clearance gets disturbingly close to the battery terminal.

It could work....... It will take more study and thought than I've got time for right now.

The next year or so haven't any western wilderness trips planned but only wandering among the populous NE States where fuel really is not an issue.... Day or Night.

So with that thought, I lay aside my dreams of additional fuel capacity and will focus on my Jeep Mirrors, my ARB Awning bracket, fixing my leaky Auto Trans, insulating the cabin from the furnace that is the radiator duct, installing my in dash AC Evaporator and new door window seals.
Oh, I ordered a rear reading light, I need to make a dog platform, finish the front Bully step and.... And ....... And..........

I'll revisit extra fuel capacity at some future date......

Dave

Still mulling over creating an Auxillary fuel tank.......

At work, we've retired many old school water fire extinguishers.
They hold 2.5 gallons, are all steel welded construction and are rated for 200psi pressure.
Chromed and completely rust free.
7" diameter and are approximately 23" long.

I held one up under the Van and while they hang below the frame rails, they don't hang down as much as the stock gas tank does.

Add a fill port, utilize with modification the stock rubber sealed top fitting for the suction hose...... It could work for very little money. Two of them in tandem would store just shy of 5 gallons.

How to plumb them in...... how to fill them........ What fittings to weld on......

To my way of thinking, mutilizing these would be Much better than a can strapped onto the Van.
