What about that tool that attaches to the outside of the IDA, fuel flows into it and rises to one of two lines. I just got one from Jay Cee I think for about $40. Haven't tried to use it yet but you unscrew a plug on the outside of the carb float bowl and attach this tool to see how high the fuel gets in the float bowl.
Has anyone use this tool. I seem to remember it is a Porsche tool.

Thinking through my reply there, if I don't give it some down movement the needle will never open . . . So, is there a 'too far down' setting? Or should I just make sure it goes far enough for the full needle travel?

After looking through the Berg instructions and the HotVWs article, I finally found my Weber Tuning Manual. It says that "Check the float maximum lowering position: The needle must travel a distance equivalent to slightly more than the diameter value (in mm) stamped on its seat."

Setting the float level on a 44 IDF is a cinch compared to this. I hope I can come to comprehend this because I just picked up a set of IDA's to put on my motor.

You set them without the gasket.
Two points for guessing how thick the gasket is supposed to be:
