Original Color?

So, I was sanding my bug today and I hit the black paint, which I think is the original color, but I burned through and there was a tannish white then through that was grey and then a darker grey. I don't get it, why is there white underneath the black and then two greys. Was my car repainted black or is it 3 coats of different color primers.

It's possible it was repainted black in the past. Many have been budget-painted decades ago with just single-stage coat.
(One of my former project bugs was sprayed black over the original similar to yours).

Hard to say exactly.. unless there is still old paper work with your bug, or if you try luck with one of those birth certificates. (be cautioned though - they don't always get the info right).

To me, the white could be Lotus white. VW used that color shade in '67.

That'd be great if it was lotus, because that's what I'm painting it. I have a paper that says around '79 it was white. I might get a birth certificate for it too.
