Cool that. I'm building a hitch or three here, thanks for the help.

Nice. I really want to get a class 2 on the truck, but there is good way to get around massive headers.

Yea I have a Vintage Speed and it makes it impossible to use a store bought unit or even a Jeremy Rock Jock one.

So the vintage speed one is pretty beefy in that space?

I wanna see something fit around this. I'd basically have to go through the apron.

i have read through the various threads regarding rear bumpers and hitches.

it seems like the best way to go is a custom build for the purpose.

currently have one of Jamie Rivers' front receiver hitches. but am in need of one for the rear to carry a mid-70's Honda CT90. So, tongue weight is my main concern.

i have some friends who could help me design and fabricate a custom set-up for this purpose.

but, U-Haul has a receiver hitch that fits '73-'79 buses. no picture or dimensions could be had for it online or at the store. price is reasonable.

anyone out there in Samba-Land have any experience with this U-Haul hitch?

might just give it a try and make sure it can be returned if it is not gonna work.

we took a small U-Haul type hitch in the 1970's that bolted to the bumper with sister plate above it and modified it. We put a sister plate inside near the taillights on the deck near the battery trays. Another similar plate was under that area. A bolt held the two plates together. To that we welded a set of bars that a beam was welded between. The original U-Haul style chrome one was welded to that beam. The hitch was heavy but it was both bolted to the body and the bumper. That gave it left and right as well as up and down strength. I pulled a 2000 pound boat with it when needed. SLOWLY because a little 1600 doesn't have lots of power. But we also pulled a Coleman camping trailer back and forth across the USA with the bus with just the U-Haul trailer. I would not put a lot of tongue weight on the uhaul one because the bumper can twist.

Peka
Oris
Westfalia

Are all og made to fit hitches for the bay window bus. Problem is they are not readily available and usually come from Europe when found. So they are expensive and need to be shipped. But quality cant be matched in the US with any home garage job for sale.

That said - if you are a baller on a budget - as most that read this are. Then go with the US garage home job when you can find them if all you want to do is pull something. The ones mentioned above are for those seeking to ad value to their bus Wink

I changed the design of the early bay hitch to a one bar inside of the bumper. It will work with the stock style Vintage Speed.

Can anyone give me any info on my trailer hitch?
It's a 69 California Roadrunner Camper.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

There is a huge, heavy square tube welded to the back of the bumper and it wraps around.

More or less just wondering if it was factory or not.

The very best is to use all six captive nuts for the bumper -- three on each side. But that may apply only to later buses, as I am not sure when VW added the two additional mounting points.

My 1978 VW (or westy?) hitch mounts to all three holes on both sides.

My '73 has all 6 nuts and I used them on both hitch setups.

First hitch that went under the bumper.

Second hitch is a heavily modified GoWesty vanagon one.

I have a 73 - shortened bus. Not shortened by me, but purchased from the person that did. I'm assuming that the vehicle is about 400-600lbs lighter as a result of this. Does anyone know what the max towing capacity is on a normal bus with a 1900? Also, what is the most you've pulled the furthest and were there any hills involved? I am clearly inexperienced in this, but I am looking to have a trailer fabricated, and I'm not sure this little jelly bean will pull anything without just wanting to pop a wheely. Thinking I may have to put 500-600lbs of weights in the front to offset everything. Thoughts?

I have a Jamie Rivers on my '73. Really just use it for a bike rack. Very well made, but it will not work with an EMPI muffler. Does work with the stock style just fine. 2" receiver.

The header style exhaust can be “lowered “ to clear the hitch ,, warm up a couple places,, bend down ,, install the “Jamie Rivers hitch” ,, warm up a couple places and bend up to make the exhaust ground clearance as much as you can ,, not perfect , but I have seen it done .
http://www.globalserve.net/~jrivers/latebayhitch.htm
If I was towing with a short bus ,, I’d put hyd surge brakes on the trailer,, way toooo easy to get pushed sideways in a turn by the trailer weight
I personally love the Jamie rivers trailer hitches, by the way there are some available right now! Wink

When you get to trailer weights of 2000# plus th etomgue weight has to be set to stability, not to worries about suspension or bumper metal

200 pounds absolute minimum at 55 mph, and 300mpounds better if you are towing faster.

Trailer instability happens suddenly, and improperly tongue weighted trailer drivers shall be beaten with dual safety chains to compliance.
