This is on a 73 Thing. From my research this engine didn't come in a thing. Anyone know from the # D385814X what this engine is? That tube that goes down to the tin, well on the other side of the tin there is nothing. Would this mean the EGR isn't connected right and if so what can it do to make it right or else just disable the EGR

I guess 1970's technology would have been a better way to say it.... It's EGR, either way. Bottom side should connect to the factory exhaust.
Search the gallery for EGR, I'm sure you'll find some pics for reference...

That tube would have a square metal filter below the sheet metal that would attach to the muffler. The other part you asked about is a dashpot that lets the throttle down slowly.

Since I don't have the part below the tin does it hurt anything? Should I just leave it as is?

It must be plugged already or you would have a leak. Most likely plugged at the carb. Leave it as it is.

It's not. I bought this a couple months ago and have been working on electrical, top, gas tank and other things. Gona start on engine shortly. It ran to put on and off trailer and into shop but it run poorly. At least it didn't smoke or knock and crank thrust is ok so maybe I'll luck out with good engine.
