Just to follow up on this thread, Joel did a fantastic job of installing the kit. No problems there at all.

The issue I am faced with is the new bay bus rear end sits even taller than stock height by about 1.5 inches. The stock bay bus CV joints don't like the large angle and are making clicking noises. I am replacing the cv joints with these dune buggy / larger angle CV joints.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003KKDANQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Hopefully this solves the clicking noise. BTW..as an experiment I loaded friends in the bus and no clicking noise since the angle was reduced. The other option I thought about is to go with an adjustable spring plate to get the angle I need but ??

Thanks again Joel...

Karl...this is good info. My bus may need to go this route to be right. Or I just load 300 pounds of sandbags in the rear Smile.

Can't you simply adjust the spring plates?

I use a couple of old crankcase studs mounted in the rear fender bracket bolt holes, with a steel bar joining them and supporting the engine. It draws the ride height down about an inch.

Yeah..gonna put on dune buggy large angle bus cv joints and mess with spring plates to bring the height down about an inch or so. I will get there, just takes time. Once I get it all sorted with the right recipe, I will report back. Thanks all

?Huh?

Can you post a picture of what that looks like? I totally don't get your solution.... a split bus does not have fenders, are you talking about a VW bug?

Bumper mounts. Fender wells. Like a mustache bar for splits.

Unfortunately, that will have absolutely no effect on the ride height of a vehicle. It is commonly known as a "traction bar" and merely keeps the engine from moving under acceleration.

This.

Hey Guys,

So monkeying around with ride height, I have static spring plates. If I replace the spring plate just one spline north, it looks like it will drop the ride height a lot more than an inch. When you guys made the comment about simply adjusting the spring plate, were you assuming I had adjustable spring plates?

Thanks guys, I appreciate the input on this..

No. There are splines on the inside end of that torsion bar, too. With one combo of up/down between the two, you can gain (or lose) about 3/16" ride height.

Huge bulb just went on!! Idea Idea now I get it!

I can do the math on moving in inner one direction and the spring plate the other direction.

Learning as I go. Cool. Thanks.

Bingo! There are a different number of inner and out splines to allow for small increments of change. I believe it comes out to just between 1/8" and 3/16" of overall height change per inner/outer spline combination.

Here is a video on YouTube. It looks to be a bay bus adjusting torsion bars and angles but same concept. The key ingredient I was missing is 5 minutes and 11 seconds into the video. I hope this helps others.

Cheers!

Bay bus, early/late beetle, type 3 are all the same setup in regards to torsion bar indexing to adjust ride height. I did not watch the entire video, but it seems like he has the right idea.

OK...looks like I have the math. My approach, do math, measure from floor, eyeball, make fine adjustments, and get as close as I can to stock height. Roll the bus around the block a few times, see if all is good.

Thanks again for all the input from the community. Super helpful. I love videos so I will make a video of the highlights and post it. Work slated with my friends for Sunday. Need to research the best way to get the spring plates off safely.

Cheers,

SP

Spring plates on a bus are a breeze. They aren't preloaded against the bottom stops like a bug. Just pry them off making sure not to pull out the torsion bar from the housing. Of course, this after marking the original orientation of the bar to plate and plate to housing.

Yes. I usually make a vertical line top to bottom over the whole thing. That way, If things get wonky, you can always go back to your starting point.

I am good at wonky. i will be marking things up to get back to where i was. I bought a "white" sharpie which is pretty cool.

Can't be too bad though, its just angles. Crap...just jinxed myself. Smile
