I'm trying to embrace the smarter not harder approach (counterposed to just being lazy) and wanted to plan it and line up what I need before ripping out the carpet.

I'm looking to strip out the carpet and OEM subfloor and put in wood. I want to slide the new flooring under the cabinets and bench of my Westy.

does anyone know the total hight of the layers to the high ribs of the floor? how deep am I looking at layering to get it to the original hight of the carpet? and how far can I go under the cabinets?

thanks.

Trey, hopefully this isn't too late, but we have the same van ('82 Westy) and I'm currently doing the same project. Smile Here's a pic of the different layers we have (about 15mm without the carpet). The top piece is your plywood, the bottom is just a strip that appears to be the same height of the ribs.

I bought Pergo Outlast which is 10mm thick. I've only test-fit the pieces so far, but with the carpet out it fits perfectly snug under both the cabinets and the bench using the existing plywood. Only drawback is the planks are 47.5" long and our floor is 49.5" so I'll have to figure something out there.

I'll post a quick writeup here once I'm done. hopefully this helps!

Hey greebly, can you take another pic showing the trim you've got covering the painted step-over area right beside your aluminum threshold?

I'm looking for a way to cover that area up on my bus, and not interfere with the sliding door. Would love some info on what you used and where you got it!

Are you referring to the diamond plate? I fabricated it from Aluminum diamond plate angle I think it is 2" angle. I have several pieces of the angle at least 6 or 8 feet long if you cannot locate any.
Here are some better Pictures.

SO you didnt put a sub floor in? Did you just lay the Laminate? Does it squeak or move around at all?

Sort of a "Thread from the Dead", but I wanted to show mine. I am VERY happy with this mod. It's super easy to sweep dirt out of the the van, it looks great, and it's fast and inexpensive. I did add a strip of quarter-round molding around 3 sides, stained to a near match. No photos of that.

We used wood laminate flooring in my son's Vanagon. His aunt had a leftover box and gave it to him for free! We spent a leisurely day to install.

I'm sure its been asked, but is a sub floor necessary?

Been doing some interior work and wanted to put down something nice. I tore out the original (rotten) sub floor. I started putting down the fatmat and wondered why do I even need a sub floor?

I was planning on putting a pergo type floor down on top of the fat mat...any issues in not having a sub floor?

Love all the great wood floors you guys have done!

I have a 85 weekender (no kitchen) and want to slap some wood in there.

In an effort to coordinate all the posts on wood flooring installation in Vanagons I thought it may be useful if people could answer the following:

1. Did you insulate your floor? What products did you use?

2. Did you use a plywood or other type of subflooring? What thickness did you use?

3. What type of flooring did you use - laminate? solid wood? What thickness?

4. Did you find a subfloor big enough to use for just one piece or did you have to buy more than one? If so where did you get it?

Thanks!

In a tin top:

1) Yes. Just the aluminum frost king stuff. Not ideal but affordable. Attached to floor with double sided carpet tape.

2) 1/4" particle board subfloor. Industrial glue to the insulation.

3) Salvaged laminate from a remodel job. It was...laminate thickness? This worked well, a standard 1" aluminum stair edge bridged the gap between the stock sliding door trim and the laminate.

4) One 4x8 sheet of wood can be cut into three pieces to cover a completely empty cabin floor. Seat out, rear heater deleted.

You guys inspired me and I knew we had a few boxes of bamboo flooring in the garage so Iron Pots now has bamboo floors. It only took one box and was ridiculously easy to do. I laid them right on top of the grey rubber mat that was under the old carpet. Didn't move any of the cabinetry or anything though I did have to move the fire extinguisher holder up a little after I was done. Looks so much better than either of those did. The metal strip on the edge was over the rubber mat before so I just repurposed it.

This saw and the box of flooring was all it took. It probably would have been easier to use something else for the two little notches I had to cut but I made do with some creative sawing. (edited to add:) Oh wait, that's a lie... I did have to rip the edge of one board with a table saw as well.
