I spoke with the seller a few minutes ago and did say the number in the ad is the same in all three locations on the vehicle.
Just does not match up with anything here on the SAMBA technical VIN/chassis number. Maybe someone more familiar then I could shed some light on this.
Look for yourself.

from up here in the salt rust encrusted north east, we wouldn't care if the vin was in crayon on that body.. take too long and that won't be your van to concern yourself over _________________

That is a '73.
Last year of the gas " door ", and early poptop. First year of late bumpers. Vin should reflect. |

I can be a 72 or a 73..
late 72s had the 73 body effects.
could be MFGd in 72 and be a 73..
we'd need to see the VIN and or door placard to know for certain. _________________

2x, it has the early gas filler door and both ends have the late bumpers. The third number of the VIN would also show it to be a '73. The build date may well have been in the latter half of '72 but it would still be a '73 model.

Unless you know something special, thats not a Model Year '72. No lowlight front turn signals, 73+ bumpers. True it may have been manufactured from August 72 on, but that would still be a MY 1973
All of this is assuming the nose is original _________________ Rebuild your own FI Harness..My Harness

I am still trying to figger out the wrong number in the add. The seller posted 2332025590 as the Vin. I spoke with him he went and looked while on the phone. He also said another person called with the same concern. See according to this site the 72 type 2 VIN start with 212 and the 73 starts with 213. Cannot find any 233 Plus no title. Hmm. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

Wrong how?, 233 is a 1973 Kombi or Westfalia, as others have already mentioned he's likely using the door sticker as a guide to the model year even though it shows the production date which could be anytime between Aug 72 and Jul 73.
The no title may be an issue though. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Your VIN number is for a '73 as is everything else about the van, accept it, that's the way it is.
Don't go spending any money on the van until you have a title in hand though. |

If the 233 is correct then someone needs to fix this chart on this site. Cause all 73 shown on this sites Bus VIN / Chassis Numbers are 213. I don't want to get into a pissing match. The no title is a can of worms for sure.

They just use 213 on the site as a placeholder, the 2nd digit reflects the model or type of Bus. Maybe it would make more sense to list it as 2x3 where x = the number representing the different models of Type 2 but then we'd have people asking howcome the VIN on the Bus they're looking at doesn't start with 2x3. _________________ 1965 Volkswagen 1500 Variant S

It's a $900 bus in AZ. But it or get off the pot, people on the eastern US would die for a bus this good. _________________ __________

I see where OP is coming from. I read his post, looked at the ad he referenced, and did a little bit of research here on the samba. I also saw that the second number was not jiving with the info I found. (link he posted)
I also did not know about the second digit being an identifier of make/style |

I did learn something about the second number in the VIN. Thanks everyone.
Now on the title issue that could be a mess. I mean what if it comes up stolen or what ever. Time will tell. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

Getting a title is not that difficult. There are services out there that can get them for you relatively inexpensively, or with a little effort you can get it done yourself.
The likelihood of it being stolen is low, the likelihood that the seller just lost it or hasn't had it since the car has been sitting 18 years is much more significant.
Take the VIN to the local DMV or call (non emergency) your local police department. They will likely be able to tell you if it is stolen - though I think your risk is low either way.
This looks like a nice, dry bus - which means that just as you are looking so too are others. Shit or get off the pot because if you wait too long she's gonna go to someone who is willing to work through these minor issues to the benefit of having a dry bus. _________________ Mike

Yeah, that bus sat at the Gold King Mine in Jerome for a number of years. I saw it when I attended multiple Jerome Jamborees. It probably belonged to Don. It has some rust in the dog legs and a bit in the floors, but it's nothing that can't be fixed.....or roll it the way it is. The seller is giving that bus away at that price. Better jump on it. _________________ 61 Bus, 71 Bus, 76 Beetle, 2013 Fiat 500 Abarth, 47 Plymouth Business Coupe, 58 BMW Isetta 300 |
