With the composition of rubber now days. I am going to see if I can source a urethane coupler.

Thank you
Tcash

let us know how the steering wheel feels - with urethane it could be a bit harsh. Are you doing your own bus or trying to see what is out there? Robbie thought the place in Valencia has the good ones.

I decided to give this a try...and here it is. Can't say if it's truly a German part as there are no markings on it at all. I suspect it isn't, but it seems quite solid.

Eric only sells things that are good quality. He's always done right by things I've gotten from him. You'll be happy with it.

Looks good to me. I see a nice fiber core. Try bending it in your hands. Does it fold like a tortilla or stay stiff as a sore back?

That looks like a proper one.

Apparently you got the last one too as their site is now showing out of stock Smile

Picked up a couple from CIP1. They sell two different versions.

This is the good one currently on sale for $23.99
http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VWC-211-415-417-GR

The rubber is hard and can't be bent. Has original looking markings with the VW logo ground off.

I received one a few days ago (same one), and yes, it looks to be the quality product we want for this application. I'm going to buy another one for my other bus, now that I see that the quality is good.

Yes SGF is the manufacturer, that is VW OEM German.

I found their web site, their entire business is making these type of flexible couplers for power transmission - steering couplers, driveshaft couplers, etc.

I looked into the Polyurethane couplers. Seems some of the ones manufactured for Bugs have been breaking.

I ordered one of each.
http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VWC-211-415-417-GR
http://www.ebay.com/itm/172328271951

This rag joint seems to be branded by the wholesaler IAP.

Will see when I receive them.
Thanks to all for the information

Received this order today. http://www.ebay.com/itm/172328271951
Did not receive the IAP coupler, but rather the Premium Quality coupler.
Not impressed.

The Premium Quality coupler is garbage. Was folding over so much in use it made my horn sound itself.

I really think this one is the current deal to be had. Stock up now at $23.99 (from cip1.com) while you have the chance. Next week who knows what will be available.

I bought 2, and they look great.

I was unable to subject the couplers to shear strength testing. Which would be the best test method. That being said.
Using my hands I twisted and compressed the couplers.

cip1: is much stiffer and most resistant to twisting and compression of the three I tested.
Note: 8mm bolts used.

Bughaus: was a close second. Not as stiff and a little easier to twist. But
I would expect this coupler to function well in service.

Premium Quality: this coupler was too soft and was easily twisted and distorted. I would not put this coupler into service and sent it back.

thanks guys.... Rolling Eyes

seeing WW carries that woven "rag joint" I stocked up and blew a wad of money at CIP.

sad to think that these are getting hard to find too. I think I have 2 OE ones on the shelf, and ordered another one.

I really need to sit down and see what is going out of stock these days. I think I bought the last of the nice early bay emblem clips from them too...the nice plastic ones that were real VW...now they sell these cheese dog ones...

http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=211853615

the OE were nice thick plastic with a diesel head that spaced the emblem off the nose a red one...

Excellent report Tcash! Thanks for your quality addition to this thread. Who would have thought that so much could be said about a little square piece of rubber?

Remember everyone, that this little square piece of rubber, all by itself, connects your steering column to your front end and wheels. If it fails, you will be turning your steering wheel to no avail, as your bus careens wildly down the road, with a mind of its own. Surprised
