The hunt for a starter hasn't been as easy as I thought it would be. These starters for AT's are a bit hard to find.
Anyway, I have a couple of options...
1. Oreilly Ultima Starter (reman)
- Plus side - it's cheap
- Negative, it's cheap. Will it be decent?
- 1kw cranking power
2. TDI Starter plus conversion bracket for van
- guy in Portland makes these brackets so that you can use a TDI starter on the van. He swears by it. Anybody have input on that approach?
- The bracket is $80 and the starters run around $60 on eBay (brand new)
- 2kw cranking power
3. More expensive rebuilt Bosch starter. Closer to $200, but better? SR25X
4. Rebuilt stock starter for $100.
Regardless, I'll be keeping my current one as a backup. It still works about 95% of the time. |
Option 2! The cranking improvement will blow your mind |

Before you plunk down more than twice as much ($246.05) for a rebuilt Bosch you might want to ask the seller what it means when they say it is...

Part Reference Number: SR25X
Brand: Bosch Reman
Core Deposit: $50.00

I do not know if that means it was rebuilt by Bosch or that the core used was a Bosch.
The rebuild I got from my local auto parts store was a rebuilt Bosch... but not rebuilt by Bosch. |

The TDI starter is the answer. More powerful and more efficient than any stock Vanagon starter was on the day it was made. _________________ Jay Brown

People view starters as some mysterious magic device that can't be opened or repaired by their owners.
I have an Automatic.
I tore my starter apart, cleaned, lubricated and repaired as needed.
It works GREAT!!!
Most starter failure is simply soil and dried grease.
Most rebulds clean them and test them after cleaning, if they work they get a pretty coat of black paint and a fancy sticker!
The starter drive pinion is a tad tricky on these but once past that hurdle it's child's play.

Interesting! I'll have to pull mine apart and see if I can revive it as a backup
For those who care, I ended up going this route:
2. TDI Starter plus conversion bracket for van
- guy in Portland makes these brackets so that you can use a TDI starter on the van. He swears by it. Anybody have input on that approach?
- The bracket is $80 and the starters run around $60 on eBay (brand new)

Picked up the TDI bracket for $80 and the starter for $60. $140 in and I have a new starter with more turque.
Just finished the install a couple of nights ago and so far so good. Hoping for many more starts _________________ <<Tyler>>
