For some reason I thought the locking steering column didn't start until 1970.

Locking steering started on VW's in the 50's and became standard equipment on North American delivered vehicles in 1968.

I assume these aren't interchangeable? They really don't look similar at all, but you know how camera angles can mess with things.

Anyone know from experience or just know?

Thanks,

It's been said that VW went to the longer housing when the padded dash was introduced.

68 had a padded dash, no cut out for the column pod. all wires ran through a hole in the face of the dash in the same area the lights switches were in. iirc it wasn't until late 69 that the dash got cut into the profile of the 70-72 column pod and the pod went "into" the dash a hair.

non padded dashes had a thin "u" shaped rubber gasket on the front of the pod where it met with the dash too

another fun fact is the 68-70 pods had the "drive with door..." warning water transfer decal on them and 71 up had the silver sticker
