Hi Samba folks....
I was just looking around here and on craigslist too and it seems to be a ton of vintage VW's around....
Are prices finally coming back down to earth or am I imagining this??...
Maybe it is time of the year....
Is spring a better time to sell than fall/winter???

Time of year.
Early summer is peak, because the dreamers all want to fulfill their midlife crises and drive a slug-bug again when the weather is nice. Come October, the leaves change and the cold sits in, and people don't want to store them, or fix them from neglecting maintenance all summer, or deal with the quirks of an older car. Then they go up for sale.
Buy now, sell in May. $$$

You should have been around in the 70s and 80s people were practically giving them away. 1982 you could still find a split window bug nice for about 7500.00 |

I think you started noticing more, because you just went on craigslist?
I bought mine recently because my daughter got a drivers license. But also because the weather is getting down in the mid 80s to high 70s, and it will be comfortable to work on it.
And also, because it seems like Fall is when people are getting better deals on that years model new cars, and the start of the next year model. The next great time to pick up a used vehicle is tax time. _________________ Jon

I wouldn't call a market flooded- it has ALWAYS been this way. Never a shortage of beetles. Much of why I can't stand to see people ask, "should I buy this?" on multiple threads- only to be shown a total POS. _________________

I think it's just coincidence. Perhaps a few more vintage cars are for sale in the fall and winter, but new-model changeover to next year's cars has nothing to do with it.
Many of these bugs don't see more than a few thousand miles per year. Their tires are replaced due to age--not because of tread wear. Some are daily-drivers. But many are now garaged toys that have nostalgic or sentimental value, and are driven a few times a week, or less.
Here in Redding, California, I see bugs out and about almost every time I go out for a drive. I suspect the rust belt folks here can't say the same. Too many of their cars deteriorated away years ago. So where you live has a lot to do with the number of bugs still putting along, too.
And prices? They're all over the place. And more money doesn't necessarily mean a better car, either. You just have to inspect and kick yourself for not inspecting every nook and cranny.
Besides, there were millions of these cars sold. Try to buy a 1957 Porthole Ford Thunderbird. You might have a hard time with that one.

Actually there's years and models that aren't easy to find and not inexpensive when you do find one in decent shape. .
There's nothing in a 70's or most 60's in that category but split windows and Zwitter's can easily go for more than a T-bird. |

I said a few years back that I hardly ever see any other bugs driving around my area. But lately, it seems like I see more and more- at least 3-4 a week, not including my own. So I guess maybe there's a small resurgence of interest...or maybe I just wasn't paying attention earlier. _________________ I'm the humblest guy on this board.
