I put my 1960 together 10 years ago apparently with alternating VW rectangle channel washers and super thick round washers holding on the fender. Apparently, I didn't have enough of the stock channelwashers to go around.
I wonder why? maybe they didn't use those in 1960.
And guess what........ the areas with round washers rusted far less. So, I decided to make them all round washers now. Can't buy a 1" OD heavy thicnkess fender washer so I made them. Yes, yes, much work for little, but I like making washers. High performance super strength lightweight washers
But anyway, what was stock?
Did they go to the channel shaped washers when they went to the square nut inserts in the body? When did that happen? I recall once seeing a bug that had some of each, and wondering if that was OE |

Pretty sure the big round washers are correct for the fenders all the way back.
So the ones that WW sells aren't good enough for you?

yes. I am also regretting not using flanged bolts with 10 or 12mm heads, but, I didn't have enough in stock. next time.
Your probably right tho, just round washers. I thought they had special washers but maybe not, every guy that takes the fender on and off uses a few different ones, ect, ect, including me. I fooled myself |

Picture shows them as round spring washers. They should have a conical shape so the bolt is in tension when installed. Much like a locking washer but doesn't cut into the sheet metal. |

The WW washers are decent but they aren't quite the same as the originals were. Originals were wave washers - you can see an original one on the left here, the new one from WW on the right:

OP ...what do you mean by 'channel' washers, as opposed to flat washers and spring (wave) washers?? _________________ "If you can't fix it with pop rivets, crazy glue and duct tape, or hold it together with zip ties, velcro or magnets, it REALLY is broken." |

sounds like he used the pan to heater channel "washers". Those were never used for fenders. _________________ Chris

Yep. I sure did.
The springy washers tend to break in half with time/rust/fatigue.
I totally believe you guys, but I rarely seen them in that habitat today.
Seems they went extinct and were overrun with other species of washers on pretty much every bug I ever worked on, but I don't do it very often, I'm mechanical specialist not a body guy.
Conical washers is a good idea! |

I ordered WW wave washers and they had a much smaller OD than stock. Andy, are those a new item at WW? The ones I got are here in this pic:

Those are just normal M8 wave washers, like the washers you'd want to use on case half nuts... not fender washers. Entirely different parts! The only way I think they sell the fender washers are in the set that I linked to above, with the thick-head bolts.
The ones I bought from them, (in my comparison photo with the bolt), I got several years ago. _________________ Andy T.
