Hey just got my buggy plated and running and took around block now there is no clutch. I checked and tried adjusting the linkage but it still feels like there is no resistance in the clutch. It is a swing axle trains. Any recommendations. What goes wrong in bell housing.

Does pushing on clutch pedal move the throw out bearing arm? If not the the cable most likely broke. If it movea the arm could have broken inside the bel housing.

You mean you adjusted the clutch cable? You should have about 1/2" to 1" or so of free play in the pedal before you feel some resistance. If nothing, then I would verify that the clutch arm is moving with the cable - probably is or else the pedal would just fall to the floor. I would drop the engine and see whats going on with the clutch cross shaft and throw out. With a buggy, dropping the engine id pretty trivial.

One of two likely problems

Either the throwout bearing has come unclipped from the cross shaft fingers

Or, one of the fingers has broken on the cross shaft

In either case, the first step is to yank the engine. Its maybe a twenty minute job, go for it

The arms on the cross shaft are only spot welded. That is the original style from the factory. Replacements are now welded all the way around.

This happened to me. This is what I found when I pulled the motor. Both fingers had broken off and fallen.

Here is a new style available. Much stronger.

I have motor out many times as I had to grind down the bell to make the 1600 larger clutch fit. I have new question it's a 1958 swing axle tha had a 1200 in it I stripped a 1600 single port out of a merlo spray coupe. I see there is a difference in throw out bearings do I need to change some thing in there to make work. Guys are saying the clutches are wearing through the clips. Any one have done this

You sure its 58? That would be a split case, non-synchro first, crash box

Can you tell me more about or post a picture of a Merlot Spray coupe?

Throw out bearings were carbon(graphite) up through 57 and used a clip like this

This thread covers later throw out bearings

If that's powered by a 1600 single port, I'm impressed

Yep, you got it. You can probably find a good used pressure plate with a centering ring pretty cheap.

If you remove the cross shaft you can probably straighten the bent finger and you might want to get the welds reinforced.

However, there is a second option you can use with your present pressure plate which is actually an upgrade
