While searching craigslist, I came across this 1964, texted the owner, and brought it home. It hasn't been driven in over 25 years. It's got some rust and sketchy patch panels, but for a Wisconsin car it's not bad.
The chassis and engine numbers both look to be January of 1964, so I'm guessing it's the original engine.
The radio delete plate was hacked for a radio. At least it's easier to fix than a hacked dash.
The front seats are rough, but the rear seat is minty fresh. I'd never seen this upholstery before, but after some research it looks like it was only available in 1964. So the rear seat is probably worth more than I paid for the car.
I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it yet. The body is in rough shape, so it would take a lot of work to restore it. I'm thinking more of a preservation than a restoration. _________________ Kenneth

Appears to be a fairly decent and complete foundation for whichever route you wish to take; looking forward to updates in the future. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

cool. yes, 64 only seat covers and the PO only hacked the radio delete plate rather than the dash _________________ Rick

Sweet find! Be careful with the upholstery though as it is not as strong as other vinyl that VW used and tends to tear along the lines in the pattern. |

To the best of my knowledge, that upholstery is not being reproduced. You will have a very hard time finding mint NOS covers so I would suggest getting new covers for all of the seats in plain vinyl. If they reproduce it someone post where. _________________ '67 Beetle L41

The rear one is too nice to recover. Maybe I can find someone that is doing a "correct" restoration and sell/trade for plain vinyl. _________________ Kenneth

Any idea what the market price for the rear seat is? I wouldn't go as far to say it's concours quality, but it is pretty nice. _________________ Kenneth

There was a set of '64 seats for sale in NC on the classifieds. I believe he was asking $365. I have (had) the blue striped material and considered buying them, but...
I ended up covering with WW vinyl in light grey instead. He eventually sold his but I don't know for how much. I do know they were for sale for awhile.
The problem is no one is making that particular fabric for the reasons I found on mine. The vinyl strips are actually stitched together and the stitching breaks down over time. Then you end up with strips of vinyl separated. Your seat is already 52 years old! How long will that upholstery last. That was what eventually steered me away from it _________________ My father's 1970 Beetle-

I'm also guessing the rear seats aren't as hard to find in good condition as the front. When I redid mine, the seating surface on the fronts had the typical "shredded" vinyl, but the rear was in really good condition. The front covers are what would be valuable. _________________ 1960 Indigo Blue Ragtop (Blue Barry)

Cleaned up some wiring, changed the points, dumped a little gas down the carb, and it fired up.

Replaced the wheel cylinders, shoes, hardware, soft lines, hard lines, and upgraded to a dual master cylinder.
And it's drive-able, although not quite roadworthy.

Ok! So now that you have it driving. "PARK IT!"
Either you have a very nasty exhaust leak or the heads are loose and banging against the top of the cylinders. Also your steering is scary. It looks like it is not attached to the dash. Or the steering coupler is shot and you were very lucky not to wreck your new ride.
Other wise nice work on getting it running. Remember, safe first, then fun. Not the other way around.
Good Luck. _________________ I have learned over the years.

It has a big hole in the muffler, steering column isn't connected, brake lights don't work, dry rotted tires.
Like I said, drive-able, but not roadworthy. _________________ Kenneth

Wow, that's such a nice, original beetle. I just hate road salt as it's done some obvious major damage to that body. It could be saved for sure but you know how the ROI would work on it.
If you're going to run it as is, I'd yank the engine. I'd bet there's tons of crap under the fan shroud blocking the cooling air. Maybe strip it down to the long block, retorque the heads, adjust the valves and do a compression test. If it passes, then reseal the engine.
Nice save _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

I'll probably run it as is. After I get the safety issues taken care of, it will be my summer daily driver. I might even just leave it at stock ride height.
I plan on pulling the engine out, there was a mouse nest in the engine compartment, so who knows what's in the fan shroud. I might throw some vintage speed parts at it while I'm in there. Not going crazy, but just enough to keep up with traffic. _________________ Kenneth

Just found something interesting regarding the interior. Lenny Copp might be making the covers, they look right to me. They are very expensive though.

Those seat covers are 5x more than I paid for the whole car. _________________ Kenneth

You paid $200 for the car I did a little research about Lenny, and I wouldn't buy from him. Apparently he does some iffy work... _________________ '67 Beetle L41
