Hi All!
I have installed a new wiring harness from Wiring Works on my 66 split bus.
My bus is a bit of a mongrel and I have a high beam foot switch. The bus worked when I got it but the wiring was a mess so I just opted for a new one.
Now I've got to the turn signa switch and I can't find out how to get it right.
The instructions that came with the harness lists regarding turn signal wires:
Black-Violet
Black-White-Green
Black-White
Black-Green
I don't have a Black Violet.
The turn signal worked before i removed it. It might be for a later model with high low beam. But I will only use the turn signal wires.
Can someone please help me?
See enclosed pics. Any input appreciated.
Cheers,
Jörgen Forssling

From your photo, I'm suspicious that someone changed the wiring of the turn signal switch. The brown wire has a non-factory connector and could be the black/violet substitute. I would suggest you disassemble the housing of the switch and look at where each wire is soldered. You will be able to identify each terminal. The black/violet wire would connect to terminal 54S of the circuit board and would connect to the 9-pin flasher on a 66/67. If you don't have a black/violet wire, then whatever color is connected to that terminal goes to the flasher. Someone may have cut or removed the wire, as well.
Do not connect any wires until you sort this out. You should have a brown wire coming from the harness (actually two, as you do), so the non-factory connector may be just a repair. Regardless, open the switch and trace the wires to the circuit board, and follow the wiring diagrams on this site for guidance. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/wiring/bus_66_USA.jpg
What you haven't made clear, really, is the year of your bus. You say it's a 66, but has a foot switch. Is that switch factory installed? Possibly, it is an earlier bus and the wiring harness is incorrect and the switch is also. Can you post the VIN? That will clear up the year question.

Is your bus US spec?
Did you buy a U.S. spec harness?
It looks like your switch wires match this 1966 Non-USA diagram:

Actually, I don't think so. His switch has three wires (black/white, black/green, black/white/green) and a brown from the end of the harness. The diagram shows only two wires and a brown--it is missing the black/white/green that his switch has. I could not find a match for the wiring of his switch, that's why I suspect a missing wire or something else. |

I'm no electrical guru... but, I see six wires on his switch, and on the diagram.
There's a black/white/green at 12:00 (going vertical). _________________ aka: Evan

I was onto a plane and got the numbers wrong.
226013682 is the VIN.
Sorry!
I will be back in Sweden to check the switch properly by wednesday.

Hi All,
I have now checked the circuit board. The results:
54B: Black-White-Green and Blue
L: Black-Green
R: Black-White
S: Brown (wrapped with the above except blue)
31: Brown (split with two connectors)
So which one of the browns above should be the Black-Violet? S?
Thanks for all your help, I could not do this without you!

Before I answer, can you tell us if you have a 9-pin flasher relay, or a relay setup like shown on the posted non-USA diagram? |

Jörgen,
Let's step back and clarify a few things...
You are referring to vendor provided instructions with wire colors for a U.S. spec bus.
Your switch has colors for non-U.S. spec wiring.
The wiring diagram (above) is for your switch.
I'm confused about why you are asking about the black/violet (when it would not exist on a non-U.S. spec bus.
Please clarify.
And, to reiterate from an earlier (unanswered) post...
Please clarify if your bus is U.S. spec or not. _________________ aka: Evan

Yes, this^^.
If your bus is non-USA, the wiring instructions are not relevant. You will need to follow the diagram posted, above, and the black/violet wire will not be used if you do not have the 9-pin flasher. |

Hi All,
I thought I had a US spec bus. I bought it from the US. It has US lights and US bumpers. But I understand allt this has been added.
When I bought the new wiring I bought what I thought I should have. A US spec wiring harness for the foot operated head light switch. (I guess this makes the wiring a 65 spec.)
It had a two pin flasher relay. I will get a three pin.
When I took the bus apart it all worked.
So I guess my bus is a bit of a mongrel. With that said. Could I use the turn signal switch or do I have to get another one?
What I know now regarding the turn signal switch:
If I test with a dial i get:
31 Brown: Ground
Connection between 54B Black-White Green and:
• Black-Green: Left position
• Black-White: Right position
• Blue: All positions
Thanks for helping me sort this out.

1965 U.S. spec wiring is one year only application.
You ask what you can use...
We're trying to determine what you have, as a baseline... before making suggestions.
The red colored data field in your decoding indicates invalid data.
"EE"
Check the lower left two characters of your data plate & compare against the codes in this link (and post the result):
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/exportcodes.php
I'm doubting you have a U.S. spec bus, because you don't have some typical North American M-codes. _________________ aka: Evan

Yes, what is the delivery port? EE is not valid.
Is it blank in that area of the M-code plate - the lower left corner?
If yes, it is a German-delivered bus.
Otherwise, it doesn't look like a typical USA-delivered vehicle.
Most (all?) US Buses have a overall group M-code in the 300 or 400 series that indicates things like MPH speedometer, red taillights, sealed beam headlights, and so on.

OK, I have a German bus that ended up in the US and now back to Sweden. I wish I could know more about its travels!
So, back to the switch. Can I make it work in my setup?
