What have you got? Show them off!
Are you running standard vw/porsche dials? Or have you gone digital? Fancy clusters? Lots of separate pods? Have you got the minimum required or have you gone all out with the info?
I'm looking at something fairly non standard - an odometer from a vintage marque... just need to figure out how i can calibrate it and get the wire ends to match up... and then add a nice tacho... but not much else after that i think... going for the minimum. _________________ It's about the going, not the showing. |

Here is what I did when everything was in mockup stages....
Left to right Oil Pressure, and Voltage, Speedo, Fuel..
Lights (above gauges) are oil, turn signal, high beams, alternator
Key, headlight switch, wiper switch on separate piece of aluminum angle mounted under and set back from front edge of dash...So for casual viewing they are sort of hidden (out of sight out of mind)
Only thing I would do different is NOT mirror polish dash plate, its a bear to keep polished and while working on plate, the removes the black coating from around gauge face... All are fixable, but in hindsight I would consider powder coat for dash..
Since previous owner had hacked dash pretty bad. I used the plate, its held in by the 4 screws, and it come out to access back of gauges (long umbilical)...

Loser, that is cool! I love seeing people adapt commonplace items for a different use.
Here is my dash. VDO gauges. Volts and fuel to the left of the speedometer, oil pressure and temp to the left. I hace to move my head a bit to see the fuel gauge when driving, but since that is one that I only need to see occasionally, I put it in the lower left spot.
Ignition, wiper and headlight switches nearest steering column. Dummy lights and high beam indicator above, turn signal indicators below, cig/power plug on the far right
There is a CB mounted on the underside.

I built one out of tubing for something a little different.
Not a buggy but this is what I did for my Oval. Houses 3 gauges plus ignition, headlight, wiper and fuel pump/coil shutoff switches. Fastened with dzus fasteners so electrical service is super easy.

Converting my buggy's windshield from flat to curved allow'd enough space for the instrument panel I had always wanted. Built guage cluster into a Fiero visor, mounted on steering column. Makes for quick and easy meter reading, with knobs near fingertips.

I used the glass, windshield frame, wipers, etc. from a Fiat Spider convertible model 124 mainly because of the size being a close fit; but also, because of the way it mounts and how it looks. (I luv chrome!) Plus, there were half a dozen of them in our local junkyard at the time (1986).

Bad lighting for colors. Bright yellow buggy, and gold anodized bezels.
Still under construction.

I'm from the less is more category. Bruce Meyers calls them worry gauges.

Here's the simple layout from my last buggy, a typical Manx clone.
Here's the gauge layout on my Manxter:

Mock-up with "paper doll" full-scale gauges:
More fussing with it to get everything right before committing to cutting and molding fiberglass, but looks like it'll work!
Quad gauge idea on the right was axed in favor of (3) individual gauges, oil pressure, water temperature and volts. _________________ 70's vintage Deserter GS buggy - undergoing transformation to Super GS! |

well, apart from the fact all your steering wheels are on the wrong side, they all look great!
Pot idea is GENIUS
and I'm loving the dials on the spine too
I have a speedo with inbuilt fuel and temperature gauge which will be going in the dash and a monster tacho which may or may not be going on the steering column (i may not actually fit it)...I've got an oil pressure gauge to fit somewhere...
I'll need a headlight switch along with wipers and squirter... an ignition light and I'd like an engine start button... what else will i need? What do you like seeing in front of you? What do you rely on? _________________ It's about the going, not the showing. |
