Answering my own questions here:
1) got the empi universal braided throttle cable - 15' long
2) will just use the sheet metal screw instead of dealing with the nut and trying to glue it in
3) will just use all purpose grease for the throttle cable.

Probably going to do some butty's bits throttle linkage for up front as well.

I don't know if you got the email, but my answers were exactly yours but the email came back as bad.

Finally got my roller tube thing installed and so far it's great!
At the same time I installed a new braided throttle cable and greased the heck out of it with white lithium grease.
Last week I also ordered one of Butty's Bits throttle linkage kits.
Good to go now!
Thank you for the suggestions.

Late to the thread here, but I have a solution to both the throttle dragging issue on carb linkage and transaxle. I run a length of bicycle brake sheath the entire length of the bus all the way through the fan shroud until I have an inch poking through. Then I use the braided throttle cable. Ran this set up on my last three busses, no issues with throttle hang up.

If I were running a show VW, I think the roller tube is a nice custom "looks" upgrade. Cool
