The snowy weather always reminds me to do this. Snow gets packed in around the shift mechanism and it becomes difficult to shift. Many later syncros came with a shifter protection tube that mounted at the shifter bushing at the middle crossmember and went aft preventing snow from hindering shifting. Ive been searching for the complete setup for years and have never found it- ive only seen one of the parts for sale.

Looking at the parts catalog it would seem relatively straightforward to make if someone on the samba could provide some pictures and dimensions-thanks

I bought all of those parts through VC from VW classic a few years ago. If you get all of the part numbers they might be able to find availability and order them for you.
My computer blue screened on me recently so I have no way of uploading images unfortunately.

the best is doing like this guy... full underside protection

https://shufti.blog/2013/11/20/vanagon-syncro-more-underbody-protection-pretty-well-finished/

on mine there's a long tube (2 sections linked by a rubber sleeve) about 4" to 5" in diameter going from rear to front. If you don't have it you can make one using PVC pipe... very simple..

I came to the same conclusion today about the full underbody protection. There must have been 200lb of ice on the van which also encapsulated everything around the front of the transmission, decoupler, accel cable, handbrake. I was off roading and going through alot of water and snow, and its been cold so it just kept collecting. The protector tube doesnt look like it would go back far enough to prevent compacted snow from fouling the low part of the shift rod. Ive also brokena nipple off the decoupler from a branch so this will be good. thanks for everyones contributions!
