This 1967 bus came to me painted and with minimal assembly and sorting done. Over the course of two winters I finished up the restoration using customer supplied parts from Wolfsburg West, Wolfgang Intl. and other parts suppliers.
When it first showed up.
Original paint? dash after buffing.
Engine sorting.
Seat restoration.
Cab area resto, dash and wiring.
Overhead air flaps.
Misc.
Headliner and Sunroof install by Mark Lapriore
Window stripping, painting and assembly.
Walk-thru.
Interior panels.
Finishing touches.
Happy customers.
This bus won a first place cup at the Flanders, NJ all Air-cooled gathering, Sept. 2016. Unfortunately it was also recently destroyed in a fire .
Thread about the fire.

Epic quality undertaking it appears. The tragic demise had to affect you too as part of your life went into the hands-on. |

Middle seat resto.
Below are several pictures showing the resto of the middle seat for this bus. The seat is actually from a '66 and earlier bus, not a '67. These pictures and text are also posted on page 40 of the "Middle seats" thread, link: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=107848
Seat covers and coco pads are from Wolfsburg West. Covers are actually TMI, I think. I used wire wherever possible, instead of string, to anchor seat covers to frames. Some modifications were necessary to make covers work with pre-'67 seat.
Frames and springs were repaired, using an early bay window front seat for replacement middle seat backrest springs that had rotted. Frames and spring sets were de-rusted, primed and painted.
Seat springs were covered with burlap (dark brown color) hog ringed to springs, coco pads (light brown color) and batting (white color).
Original grab handle was re-used with new ends and center cap.
Before:
Broken backrest springs.
Bay window donor seat.
Replacement springs (4) installed on left side of backrest.
Outer frame was also reinforced using sections of frame sandwiched on with metal clips.
The 'tuck' slot was straightened and cleaned as best as possible.
Frame painted.
Burlap over springs to protect bottom sides of coco pads.
Batting was placed over coco pads and tucked into springs. You can also see pull wire here, which replaced flimsy string, as supplied.
Seat bottom cover is on.
Ashtray mount dimensions on backboard.
Upper screw was added to hold new backing panel to seat frame.
Reinforcement plate for ashtray mount, on inside of backboard.
I re-used the original mount plate after rust treating and fresh paint.
Ashtray slides right into mount.
Pulling and tucking backrest cover is hard work on the fingers.
This shows the modifications I had my upholstery guy stitch up to make the seat cover work with a pre-'67 seat.
Customer ordered '67 seat covers, but middle seat is actually a '66 or earlier model with slightly different seat leg locations than the '67 seats.
Original grab handle was cleaned and re-used. New end caps and center cap are from Brad "volksheime"; http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1411448

Front window assemblies.
These were one of the last things I installed on this bus. I took a bunch of pictures while disassembling to help with assembly later. I had to strip all the old paint off before having the pieces painted with Beige Grey by a local body shop.
Disassembly.
Pressing wing windows into frames.
I made a wooden jig and used four big carpenter clamps, and a 50lb weight to keep everything in place.
This shows the relief cuts I made in the rubber seal for the wing window corners. The excess material gets trimmed off later.
These seals go into wing frame before installing wing window.
Finishing up passenger assembly seals.
Installed passenger side assembly.
Driver's side window assembly resting against temporary window assembly I used. The temp assembly is from my '61 bus, but fit in the '67 door ok for short term use and test driving.
