There's so much to see in that photo and I was so enthralled by it all that it just dawned on me about the hinged rear access to the ambo. Is that unusual? I know the highroof ambulance itself is unusual but I guess a flip up hatch may not be reachable to close by a standard height person. |
That's why ambulances were hinged at the bottom typically. That side hinge is definitely odd. |

i think that hatch would be hard to close no matter where it is hinged. top or bottom. if it is hinged up top you can't reach it in the up position. If it is hinged at the bottom it is heavy as hell and the lock would be at the top.... also you would be 4 feet or so behind the bus when it is down.... _________________ regards

I thought they went down so the gurney wheels would collapse, ramp up, and semi guide into the bed. |

A buddy of mine sent me this photo today. He saw the bus in the background and thought of me.

Righteous photo! How awesome would it be to have that pirouette with its turntable awning just to set up next to your campsite: plus each facet has a medallion. |

Another from my postcard collection...
I know, I know, it's doesn't really "feature" the VW so well, but, well, it is another bus caught in amber. Enjoy.

That car in front looks like it has VW wheels, hubcaps, and headlights. |

It's a DKW 1000/3=6, it has a 3-cilinder two-stoke engine. |

A friend had one. I loved the sound and the smoke. I think it had 4-on-the-tree didn't it? |
