I have wanted a Baja for a few years. This one came up on ebay, I put a bid on it and came out the winner.

This is all I have as far as spec's and build pictures that I recived from the previous owner.
1968 Volkswagen Turbo Diesel Baja Bug, less then 1,000 miles on a complete rebuild. 1.6L Volkswagen Diesel with a water cooled Subaru turbo mated to a bus transaxle with solid engine mounts. New cylinder head, camshaft and cam followers, rings, pistons, bearings, oil pump, timing belt, tensioner, water pump, oil pump drive, rebuilt injectors, injection pump and new return lines. K&N air filter, 2 wire GM alternator, rebuilt cv axles with boots, wheel bearings and seals, new brakes, wheel cylinders, radiator and water lines front to rear.

Complete electrical replacement, new windshield, headliner, auto meter gauges, scat shifter, scat front and rear upholstery, 8 gallon spun aluminum fuel tank with fuel level sender, liquid heater with 3 speed blower motor piped into existing ducting, carpet kit with rubber floor mat, floor pans, dash pad, glove box, wiper motor and washer pump, door and window seals throughout entire vehicle.

Fresh body work and paint, new wide eye Baja kit, headlights, buckets, tail lights and L.E.D turn signals. Rear tires are 265/75R15 Terra Trac's and front tires are 235/75R15 Terra Trac's. ( I have changed the tires and wheels )

This was my first time seeing it in person when it got to Texas.
I was very happy with it, you never know what you will get buying something out of state through ebay without traveling to look at it.

Well right out of the gate on the first outing in the Baja this happens....

on the way to the Nacogdoches this past Saturday.....

I ran her out of fuel and did not realize it till about 3 hrs after it stopped running. The previous owner who built her and I texted back and forth for a couple of hours trouble shooting, I felt like a complete idiot once I realized she was out of fuel.

20 minutes after that I pull into a shell station to get fuel. I ended up overflowing the fuel, I go and grab a towel under the hood and clean the diesel off of her. I end up throwing the towel away and jump in and take off totally forgetting to latch the hood (hey its my first Baja) and then this happens....

Well that really sucked...
I turned around and headed home. Well I did make a stop off at Jason's house. He popped the roof out in about 5 seconds.

Sunday I started the prep on the roof.

Grabbed some supplies on monday, the previous owner sent me a pic of the paint he used so color match was no issue

Well prior to that fiasco I had ordered new tires and wheels. Hence the reason I wasted no time getting her fixed.


A buddy gave me a hand we spent 4 and a 1/2 hours mounting them. Now I see why tire shops charge so much to mount beadlock wheels. I hated them for a moment due to the work, but sure like the finished product now.

I did a few interior upgrades as well.

Well I got a few things knocked out on the Baja in the past couple of weeks
I was walking through the garage the other day and noticed that she had pissed brake fluid out of the rear wheel cylinders. I found a couple things that needed attention. See if you can notice what is wrong in the first pic....

lost a bolt and the emergency brake hook is on the wrong side. I went ahead and rebuilt both sides,

I also got some tunes put in for the wife. I really dig this system it is totally hidden. Its a bluetooth amp and the speakers slide under the front seats. They have forward and rear facing mids and highs with 8" subs.

I put a dollar in the picture so you could see just how small the amp is.

I also put some fat mat down and new rubber floors.

I needed a passenger side mirror so I sourced a couple of mirrors from thesamba,

Other than installing new scat door panels to match the scat seats. This is where I am at now with the Baja
Not done yet but here is a sneak peek of the new rack David is building for me. I had no place to carry a spare or chairs and cooler..

My buddy David is also building tubular running boards. Ill post those pics up in the next few weeks. My next step will be upgrading the suspension and getting a little more lift out of her.

Yes its 1"

Diesel runs great! I clocked 41 mpg on the last outing using GPS for my mileage since the speedometer is off due to tire size.

It was a kind of shock at first due to the motor being rigid mounted you get a lot of vibration noise at idle inside the cab. On my list of things to do is to figure out how to add rubber mounts.

Really digging this Baja Applause Was also wondering how the turbo diesel was working for you. I tried to build torque in mine with a thick wall 2180 motor for btm end grunt. I would imagine your diesel would be even better. How many cc is that motor? How far do you spin that motor up for rpms ? I have mine rev limited to 6000 and seems to be all done with a 110 cam. I had gone through a good chunk of change converting to fuel injection and spark control that diesel looks like another way to skin the cat in a real nice package. I used 1" tube shaft from overhead doors to build my rack Very Happy I am in the business so it was cheap and worked great really like how you are incorporating the spare tire to the rack. I am a little shy about adding permanent weight to the roof since flipping mine over ! And now store the jack, shovel and axe at a lower centre of gravity lol😳 I also had to pound a good size dent out of the roof 😡 Had to find where you got those sub speakers from they look perfect -my old bazooka is not cutting it and is probly dangerous if it were to get loose in the car if the situation were to get a little western if ya know what I mean😟 Keep the updates coming I love this car. Will you be using this car off road ? Should be fun either way I have fun beating on mine on the street as well as of road.I will be watching for your future posts👌 Have fun

Great looking Baja. I really don't have any other choice on the spare if I want to carry one. I have only had it offroad once since I have owned it. Where I live there isnt a lot of places to go but I am hoping to find someplace in the near future. Its 1600 cc that with the stock 5 rib tranny it pretty much feels like driving a stock bay window bus. Ive looked in to getting more performance out of it but it runs so damn nice I dont really want to mess with it.

These are the speakers I used

I liked them because they have mids and highs facing forward and rear with the 8" sub firing up into the seat. Im running mine off of the bluetooth and iphone so there is no head unit. I did have to install an EQ app when I got the iphone 6. If your using a head unit you probably wouldnt need the EQ.

Nice! You'll definitely need to tie the transmission frame horn to the body for some more support, if it hasn't been done yet, especially if you plan on any off road driving.

The bearing cap is also inverted. The hourglass shapes should be low on the sides - front and back.

I expect you'll find those side mirror mounted lights will light up the fender tops and hood vastly more than the road ahead.

Been there - Tried that - Changed it.

That roof rack looks good too. It needs some support at the far back to deal with the mass of the wheel and tire.

Good catch on the bearing cap, I must have been tired, funny thing is that I sprayed brake clean through the weep hole to make sure it was not plugged up.


So you think I need more than the six legs on the roof rack?

Nope. 6 legs is what I had in mind. Just missed the rear one by the welder ground clamp in this pic:

You may want to protect the front of those fenders with a patch of bedliner up to about where the ground cable crosses the fender welting. Even on pavement, those fenders get a lot of grit thrown at them.
