This is sort of a re-post. V6 TDI and 5HP19 ZF Audi gearbox in a Vanagon.
Samba member Ray_V6TDI of Bremen, Germany did this conversion, and in Mar 2016, posted a thread titled Tiptronic-Modification now public Domain. It did not get much attention and there's not much action on that thread. I suppose because he didn't want to appear boastful. And the pictures were all hidden away in a .zip file!
PedroKrusher unearthed the photos on the 20th post but they were too far down by then, too late. SnowSyncro added some great comments, but again, I think it's all lost because the of the crazy thread title and no pics in the opening post.
So as an attempt to get some real discussion I made THIS NEW thread and put the description up TOP, with the pics; as we like them. Only problem is, there is no descriptions. I hope Raimund will reply and tell us more about the photos. When was the project done? Who is driving it, and how many miles? The only problem I see is the ground clearance, but maybe the van has been lowered.
Is there any interest in this project? I think its incredible.
It's a matter of marketing. _________________

It's academically interesting to me. I considered it for a little while but opted against it. Instead I am going with a 4hp22zf from a Porsche 964. The custom machine work on the 5hp19 would likely cost more than the entire Porsche trans. Yes, you get another gear, but I will already be loping along at 2,600 rpms @ 75 MPH in 4th with lockup. No need (and really no advantage) for taller than that. The advantages to the Porsche tiptronic are that it has the diff rotating the correct direction, is completely unmodified, has the WBX bell housing bolt pattern (in my case I'm using an adapter plate to mount to an ALH TDI), and was fitted to a stock application with more torque going through it. _________________ I am a high-functioning autistic into VW diesels and Vanagons along with other things that are unrelated to this site. |

I think that it's a great conversion and I have seen a few done over the years.
HA Projekt offered a kit to do this many years ago but it was €5,000 I think just for the kit, not including the gearbox.
That kit also did not deal with the problems that are caused by the ratio change when replacing the three gears with two and how the ECU doesn't like those new signals.
I have a good friend in Germany who has a T3 Panel van with the same setup.
I would be more interested if the work had been carried out on a 5HP24A which uses the Audi V8.
The 2.5TDi engine is not a great engine. It uses a lot of fuel and destroys rocker arms and camshafts regularly. My father has had three of these engines.
Also, it's impossible to use 4WD with the conversion as the centre differential is removed. Again, I'd be very interested if it was possible to reverse the drive but keep the Quattro system.
It's a great bit of engineering but with a limited market?
