My 84' Vanagon is having some problems with the brakes.
There was a point where my clutch was completely loose, so I topped off the clutch/brake fluid and that did the trick. I suspect there's a leak in there somewhere because I seem to have to fill it up more often than I imagine I should.
The problem now, which doesn't seem to be affected by the fluid, is that my brakes seem to randomly lose pressure after about 30 minutes of driving. Scary stuff when it first happened. When I come back to the van after a few minutes, the pressure is back to normal. A similar thing occasionally happens when I'm stopped at a light, where my foot will slowly reach floor while on the brake.
Just asking around, I've heard the problem could be a bad master cylinder, but I'd figured I'd get some more opinions. Any help that can point me in the right direction to solve this problem is much appreciated! |

Locate the leaking brake line, replace ir with a new line, fill the master cylinder again, bleed the brakes.
Now you'll have a good pedal.
Being that you asked about this problem, I think it may be time for you to locate a good shop to repair it.

If I ever need to top up the hydraulic fluid, I look for the leak.
If you cannot find it - pump the brakes awhile to make the puddle bigger.
It is also possible for the leak to be inside and soaking into the carpet so check there too. Could even be leaking into the booster but for now assume you are looking for a puddle. |
