I was just reading in another thread where somebody was talking about taking off the top trim and polishing it out, but my trim feels a little heavy like it is metal and it looks like chrome to me. Am I wrong? Because if it is in fact aluminum under there, I would like to just sanded down and polish it but would like to know what I'm looking at here. I appreciate it
Also, is it true the front air vents have a coating on them that requires oven cleaner before polishing?
I'm in that part where I am polishing parts and doing final assembly, so wanted to see what issues I may have. _________________ its not about what you say you will do oneday, its what you do today that actualy means something. |

The scraper trim is chrome plated as are pillar and pop out trims. The roof gutter edge trim is aluminium, maybe they were referring to a this. |

Must depend on the year, on my '74 all trim was aluminum. The only pieces that were chromed were the pop out mechanism itself, mirrors, and the bumpers.
To make the aluminum easier to polish spraying it with oven cleaner helps as you mentioned. The lye dissolves the clear anodizing, otherwise it's very hard to sand. You can tell when it's off as a fine grit sandpaper will drag on the raw aluminum.
And the front grills are definitely aluminum. You can take them apart by pending back the tabs which will help get them polished. |

thanks guys! It is a 71, and from what i hear they went to aluminum after 71. I polished out the grills and nose badge, and the cleaner seemed to help some. I appreciate the feedback. It helped.
now to ship some parts to the chrome shop _________________ its not about what you say you will do oneday, its what you do today that actualy means something. |
