|

Does anyone know if the starter on this 1974 2.0 engine has a starter with the bendix clutch pac buried in the starter?
the whole point of this question is to see if we can put this motor into a baja with minimal issues. I've already discussed the pressure plate issues, but then someone mentioned the starter issue.
This is from another thread but thought I would post here also.
If this helps:
Engine code is GA014844
an online source says the trans code is "HA 01 01 4- HA 31 07 4"
When I do a quick search on a standard parts website the description of the starter has the statement "Direct drive starter which has no internal gear set. " Maybe this answers the Q. I don't know.
Original thread is http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=8344264#8344264
Pic of the engine code:

I will have to dig for the information....but whats internal to the starter mechanism is not the big issue IIRC.
The issue with the 914 is the 914 specific flywheel whose ring gear is spaced about 5mm differently as compared to the bus and 411/412....so if its going in a 914....with a 914 forged flywheel and with a 914 transmission...you need the 914 starter.
If its going in a bus or 411/412....or a bug...you just need the standard buss starter and flywheel. Ray |

Thank you.
it would be going into a 71 Baja with the stock transmission and someone raised the starter issue in the other thread. |

Yes.....though the stock 914 2.0 starter "may" have an internal bendix arrangement.....that is not what makes it different enough that the car cares. Its the flywheel ring gear spacing.
Since the engine cases are largely all the same.....just use a bus flywheel and starter. If you have a 914 2.0 starter.....and it works......you can probably sell it for enough to buy the flywheel and starter you need. Ray |

According to the PO this was installed in his 1973 camp mobile
When he purchased the vehical.
He swapped this out for a 1.7 bus motor when he roasted an exhaust valve.
At that time he took the starter and carbs off the 2.0 to install in the 1.7
So... does that explain the starter flywheel situation?
I'm guessing these clues will tell me if I need a. Is starter or a Porsche starter.
And yes. I realize is just a matter of the parts number.
Many thanks in advance |

Post a picture of the flywheel you have.
Here are some notes.

Really....just get a bus flywheel for 210 or 215mm . Also if you Google 914 flywheel versus bus differences you will see lots of info.

Ok. So here is a pic of the flywheel.... it is not there.
So does that mean I can slap some bug stuff on there and call it a day?
I realize this is totally wishful thinking.

No you can't slap in a bug flywheel as they are for Type 1's. Get a BUS on 210 or 215 flywheel and then the right pressure plate for it along with clutch disc. _________________ 70 Ghia Black convert-9/69 build date-stock w/133k 1600 SP-barn find now with a rebuilt tranny and engine

What do you think about dual H40s for carbs?
I'm on a budget and want power but can't spring for fancy carbs yet |
