Problem: While loosening the rear left side bleeder valve it was so tight it broke off. Before I make any mistakes, what's the best approach to digging it out. It broke right level with the edge of the hole. Bob

Take a look in this thread. I went through how to get out a broken bleeder valves.

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=658176

You want to take the good bleeder valve....old one.....and find what drill bit is about 1mm oversize to the bore....and find out the depth to drill and mark the ddill but, with taoe. Drill out the center.....but dont drill through the end.... heat it up...lube it....and hammer in a torx bit and twist it out.

Actually.......its not worth one bit of that effort. You can buy brand new cylinders from Rockauto.......either Centric, Dorman, Beck Arnely or Raybestos......any of these brands.....for under $15 each with about $5-7 shipping. Just buy two new ones and get it done.

While you are at it....Rockauto is having a manufactures closeout on Wagner rear brake shoe sets. $7.95 per set. New shoe hold down springs and steel cups.....are 23 cents each if you need them. Ray

Yep, I decided to do as you suggested. It's not worth all the effort to clean it out and the cost otherwise isn't all that bad. Thanks, Bob

Question: Can the wheel cylinder be removed without removing the shoes? Is it possible to spread the shoes and hold them free of the cylinder slots? If that's possible it looks like the cylinder can be removed and replaced with out a complete dismantle.

The reason I ask the cylinder and shoes are in new like condition, and it would be great to just remove the cylinder, and work out the broken bleedvalve, and put it back in.

If hou have somethong like a brake spring spreaded pliers that you can use to unhook the spring between the shoes that is attached to the spreader bar between the shoes.....yes.

In a pinch.....a pair of needle nose vise grip pliers clamped onto that spring to unhook it will allow the brake shoes to be pushed away from each other without removing the hold down springs and cups. Then disconnect the brake line, remove the holding bolt for the cylinder, push the pistons inward to clear the shoes.....and knock the cylinder inward with a hanmer. Ray
