I fitted my Dormobile roof for the first time.
It's on a LHD bus and I guess it's from a Bay Window bus, because there are locking rubbers at the outside.
I prefer the hinges at the opposite of the swing doors, but noticed that the front side is a bit other shaped than the back side.
The bottom edge of the roof is slightly wider at the back.
Is there a front and back side of a Dormobile roof?
I see them hinged at both side on Split Buses, but may be because it's a Bay window roof?

Well, the simplest determining factor for me is that you can not run a westy tent if the roof hinges on the door side...

It should fit/work fine the way you have it.

A tent can be done with either side but not easily on the hinge side as Jake mentioned. You lose the ability to slide the final pole in that pulls the canvas tight. Here's an example:

I hinged mine like you have yours set up, it was off of a Bay.
Most are hinged to open with the tent side above the doors.
We use an awning while camping and would not be able to the other way, plus I like the look of the windows on the open top, looking in from the door.

Also before you use those outside mounted hold down straps that look like Baja hood straps, you can get the original style straps and clasps right from Dormobile.

If you want to hang a westy tent

do it like this factory SO-42 dormobile:

the rear tent mount was modified/ cut slightly

I have seen bays with the same orientation:

A Westy tent is no option, so this means the hinge side doesn't matter.
Thanx!

The options are always open! Cool

My top is also off a '69 phatchick and it's true that the front "edge" is shallower than the back one. I should have shaved some to make it fit better but didn't. Sad

Anyway, I wanted my top hinged at the doors side. At the time I didn't care about a tent or paying so much for one as they are costly. However, last year I scored on this phatchick one and it fits bitchen! Razz

Ultimately it is a personal choice as to how you want to use your bus. So knock yourself out and go with what you want! Wink

Here's how I use the "baja rubber straps" to hold down the Dormobil top on the inside!!! Cool

That is exactly what I decided to do yesterday! Very Happy
I don't mount the beds anyway, so I have space room for that.

You do want to get the stronger more solid like catches for the rubber straps or beef up the ones you get! Common ones are weak and can bent back thus allowing the top to pop up while driving. Don't ask me how I know. Rolling Eyes

As with anything, it all depends on the speed of the vehicle when it happens but it is no fun at ANY speed! Just make sure that when latched there is absolutely no chance of the tabs failing. On that note, I actually have an extra strap at the front just in case since I noticed the front rubber strap was becoming "soft". So even with beefing up the catch there may be a possibility of the rubber to give way. I'll try to snap a pix of the extra strap and post it here later. Cool

I liked the conventional way where the hinges are on the side opposite of the cargo doors (aka driver side) as it was on my bus, and just about every LHD dormy in europe.

what i like in the picture is the window in the side of the fabric.

chances are it is going to be way too bright in there for here in the south. still like it

I prefer horizontal stripes. Wink
But I made holes already, the hinges will be at the left side indeed:

vertical stripes are slimming, but i do like the original pattern better as well.

dormies are super bright, i would be thinking about tinting the windows, or putting up curtains.

bus and roof look good
