I found 1939 Hanomag 1.3 which on sale in Moscow in current time (Car was brought as a trophy from Germany in 1945).

A certain Mr Adolf Hilter asked a number of motor manufacturers to put forward their idea for a People's Car, and this is what Hanomag, normally known for their lorries and heavier vehicles, put forward as their proposal for the 1939 Berlin Motor Show. Some German manufacturers felt that being associated with cheap, mass produced cars, didn't fit their image, and either didn't comply, or did so unwillingly, if only to keep Adolf happy.
Back in the mid 80's, I tried to buy one of these, which suddenly appeared at the Bristol Classic Car Show auction, along with a 1948 fin tail Tatra, plus a few other interesting cars, but the Hanomag didn't sell.
I was subsequently informed by a reliable source, that they had come from Czechoslovakia (Still Cold War days) and despite a ban on exporting such cars, they had been been smuggled out of the country, at the dead on night, on a quiet northern border, and that the Customs people had been paid to turn a blind eye.
Having managed somehow to obtain a phone number afterwards, I tried to buy the car directly from the secretive, and hard to contact seller, only in the end to be told that it had been sold to an unknown German man. Then about 6 years later, on a cold November day, whilst present at a wartime film shoot in Cardiff, with Geoff Sumpter and his Kubel, what should turn up on a low loader, but the same Hanomag! It seems it had been bought by Tony Oliver of London, a well known vehicle collector, and supplier of vehicles to the film industry.
Luckily, I ended up driving it in the film, and because of the endless retakes, and the car sitting around with its engine running, it boiled over once or twice. I recall we did one take 6 times, & seem to remember that for a whole days worth of filming, in the end, this represented 30 seconds on screen! I concluded on that day, that to be a film star, you have to be able to put up with an extraordinary amount of boredom, but it did mean that I got to drive a Hanomag 'Peoples Car'. |

Interesting story!
Oh, and yeah, let's say he "asked" the manufacturers to participate.

Truly a wonderful thread! I love how people worldwide have been brought together via our love for VWs. Truly it's a shame for all the brilliant people, art, medicine, contributions, etc that were lost during the wars. As an American who has traveled Europe, I cannot imagine the destruction/suffering. I've visited Poland, Germany, Czech republic and have been to the remains of the concentration camps. I've also owned a Kubelwagen and heard stories from my late grandfather and his friends about the American GIs taking what they could as well. Regardless, it's all history and hopefully never to be repeated again. This thread and several others show that there is still so many artifacts that are waiting to be discovered. Keep it up fellas |

Last KdF Type 82E 1943 from Kazan was bought Richard (iwlego) from Germany to his Museum collection.
We know perfectly that there in Russia is still a lot of Kdf in the old village garages in our big country _________________ VW Käfer (Vocho), First registration date in Deutschland: 14/09/1984, Engine 1200.
