Please HELP! Seam Between Front Inner Fender & Door Hinge

Hi all, I've been in the process of a full tear down restoration of my '72 std. beetle. The pan is full done now I'm onto the bod work, the drivers side lower door hinge, inner fender well and heater channel were gone. So I've replace all panels I'm hung up on the seam between the inner fender well and the door hinge. Both new pieces of sheet metal have flat steel coming out and but up to each other, my question is do they fold over each other, do the get welded together? I'm lost here and I've been searching these forums and Google with no results. Maybe I'm calling it the wrong thing? Can someone give me some advice or direct me to a thread with some detail on this?

Everything I find where people replace the hinge pillar they are only doing a small section or they dont give the detail as to how the joined the two pieces.
