Hi- I'm starting this thread to document a good friend/client's 1952 Deluxe. The bus was purchased in the early 1990s and I believe came out of the Modesto, California area. I've heard it was a known bus so if anyone has info or pictures, feel free to post.
It was fairly complete and had been a driver with a later bug 36hp but hadn't been on the road for a while. I remember putting a new transmission in it, going through the brakes and putting new tires on it and getting it back on the road. The bus was left that way through the mid to late '90s. Here's a couple picts when we drove it to Jerome, probably around 1998...
Sometime around 2000 there was a decision to restore it. We disassembled it and I had the body media stripped and got started on the bodywork. That ended up being short lived as the owner made a move a couple hours north and shortly after that I moved across town. We decided to put the bus in storage up in Northern Arizona and I'd get back on it once I was settled into my new place... So 15 years or so later, I went back up and got it. I can't seem to find any pics of the work I did on it back then but it wasn't very much. I'll do my best to keep this thread updated. Here's a couple pics back in Phoenix and off the trailer...

Now it's in the shop, emptied out and deciding where to start. Obviously it's pretty good for a '52, though it does have its share of damage and odd localized rust. In addition to that, some PO went around drilling and poking holes where I guess they thought it needed to drain. It probably helped though many areas they hammered on a screwdriver till it tore through the metal stretching it pretty good in spots.
My plan is to preserve as much metal as possible. With that said the right side is the worst and the plan is to go all the way with this bus, so door fitment will be important. Here are some picts of the quarter panel and cargo doors...
Luckily we were able to source some new sheetmetal a while back.

I was reluctant to go immediately to the new sheetmetal... So I took some measurements and messed around with the cargo doors for a little bit but didn't see it coming out well. Both the lower hinges and mounting points on the pillars were wasted, as I know most barn doors are, but I didn't want to end up with a bunch of time into repair and not be really happy with it. So I tried to fit the new doors, but they weren't even close with the damaged pillars and ended up scabbing in the mounting point on the B-pillar to get the door where I wanted it. Now I have the forward cargo door where I want it and am comfortable using it as a base-point to fit the rear up to...
Some more quarter panel damage, and then removed...
I was hoping to salvage the C-pillar, but ended up replacing it with with an Autocraft piece to give me the flexibility I needed to get the rear cargo door fit.
Everything clamped up and doors are finally getting close.

Quarter panel is ready to weld on now...
I fabbed a wheel well brace. This bus had one on the right side, but not on the left...
Finished the repair on the B-pillar and more cargo door fitting with hardware installed.

I bought this bus along with a 52 pickup in 1994. In the Barndoor Registry it is the 4th oldest 1952 24G. It was a good driver as witnessed the trek to the Jerome Jamboree.
I had an awesome time at Bad Camberg in 1999 with the Return to the Fatherland tour. I wanted to return in 2003 with a vehicle to hold 4 people and luggage. Hence taking the 52 bus.
Took it apart and 9/11 occurred. Plans changed. We got it media blasted and David replaced the front clip. Then it sat for years storing parts.
Decided about 2 years ago to go ahead but had to wait for David until he picked it up in January. Planning on full restoration so enjoy this thread as it progresses. |
