Was runing a 70 standard bus with a 1.6L stock engine. Just lost another T1 1.6L engine, middle bearing saddle cracked. This was a clean standard case with a 10/10 crank. The bus already has a 73 T2 002 tranny and I have a few T2/4 engines laying around along with plenty of parts to build more. I also run a 78 bus with a 2.0L and the motor has got the meat, 380,000+ miles, third rebuild, still a standard case and crank, can't beat that for strength.

As anybody out there in bay-bus-land shoveled a T2/4 engine into a early bay? Can the original cooling be used or does it require converting to upright cooling?

I realize there is a little bit of tin work and the rear hanger will equire some mods. But first hand experience would be appreciated.

I've been thinking about that too. I've got an engineless 71 in my garage right now...

I'm not big on putting T4's in early busses (or T1's in late busses for that matter). But if I were going to do it, I'd read this site:

http://www.tunacan.org/index.shtml

I also would NOT align born any case, especially a mag case. Just too many problems and most machine shop folks don't have the right equipment. GeneBerg.com has a write up that makes a lot of sense on his tech pages. Besides, T1 cases are cheap!

I'm also not sure that if I were dropping a T4 into anything, that I'd begin with a case that I knew had 350,000 miles on it. Converting the T4 to upright cooling will cost you a bundle, and I would cut not corners on the T4 case either.

Stealing the topic a little since I believe Tunacan should answer all your questions regarding the fan conversion necessary. A quote from Tunacan that I've seen repeated often from other sources:

"A stock 2.0 liter can put out 100hp in stock form: that's over 40hp more than a stock 1600cc Type 1. Take that 100hp 2.0,

My Bentley says the highest hp for a 2.0 GD block is 70, which is only 10 hp more than a stock AE block 1600 dual port. Where is the 100 hp figure coming from? That's quite an exageration.

73/74 914 2.0L is a type 4 engine and stock, it was rated at 95 hp.

VW rated those engines with all the restrictive emission controls on them. If you live in an area that does not have emission tests (as I do) you can get those numbers. I can run 80 all day on the Interstate in my 79 with a 2 litre even up hills.

A type 4 will also give you alot more low end than a stock dual port 1600.

For the conversion, I imagine if you buy the Type 4 Conversion Manual that it will help you greatly. I'll be running a T4 motor in my beetle I'm redoing and it has ALL the info about converting to upright, even in some casing using a 36hp shroud, etc. and fabricating the tinwork!

Here is the link to the manual.

http://www.nextgen-usa.com/

just click on the conversion manual link and it will tell you about it.

Good info and some pics
http://www.aircooledtech.com/type4_upright_conversion/
more for a beetle though....

Some older info....TYPE 4 into early Type 2 but...

http://www.dolphinsci.com/typeIV.html

Hope it helps...

Nemobuscaptain,

The reference to the 78 bus I have with 380K, third rebuild and still cruising with standard crank and case is solely to show that a T4 has got the strength. If and when the time comes, if all parts check out I would rebuild it again and slip it back into my 78 bay. All my machine work is done at RIMCO.

So far this idea of slipping a T4 into a early bay is becoming a bust, the tranny hanger would be a real pain to install. Probably explains why there is no articles on it here and ShopTalks.

Busman,
Maybe just build a type1 with a new case, CW crank and balance it all well.

It seems like I'm always hearing of problems with used align-bored cases.

That is the direction I am heading, although research has not pinned down which is the best of the new T1 cases. Not after a High Perf one, motor will be a 1.6L stocker with CW crank, DP heads, stock or very mild cam. What is really odd, a person can put together a "NEW" T1 engine for less than what it costs to overhaul a T4.
